"I belong on Broadway."
"After the performance I just saw, there's no way you should be doing anything else."
―Angie Martinelli and Peggy Carter[src]

Angela "Angie" Martinelli is an automat waitress and aspiring actress who became friends with Peggy Carter.

Biography[]

Dream of Stardom[]

Working as the Waitress[]

Angie Martinelli worked as a waitress at L&L Automat, a restaurant in New York City. She would meet and become good friends with Peggy Carter, a regular customer, who Martinelli nicknamed "English", due to her being from England. Seeking to become an actress, she auditioned for many roles, including the part of Betty Carver in The Captain America Adventure Program but did not receive the role, losing it to Arlene French.[2]

Assisting Peggy Carter[]

"I had an audition today, uptown. Took three trains, got two bars into "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't". They gave me the hook. I guess I ain't. We all got to pay our dues, even if it takes a while."

Martinelii chatting with Peggy Carter

One day, Martinelli had an audition for a role in a musical, where she had to take three trains to get there, only to be stopped after singing two bars into her song. That night, when Martinelli was serving Peggy Carter, she noticed a picture of Captain America in her newspaper, and commented on seeing him at a USO show where she was impressed by his physique. Carter responded with a vague agreement, as she secretly had a romantic relationship with him.

Martinelii comforts Peggy Carter about her job

Noticing Carter feeling depressed, Martinelli asked what was wrong, which Carter talked about being under-utilised at her job. To comfort her friend, Martinelli told Carter that her time would come where she would prove herself, even if it took a while. The two were interrupted when a regular customer rudely called for service. Martinelli briefly expressed her thoughts about the customer to Carter and then went to serve him.

The next day, Martinelli was harassed by the same customer again over his meal. The customer complained to Martinelli, claiming that he was fed better when he was in a prisoner of war camp during World War II, and gave his meal back. He then demeaned Martinelli by claiming that her intelligence was not her best feature, and slapped her on her behind when she walked away. When Martinelli looked back at the customer, she noticed him leaving her a big tip, to her joy and confusion.[1]

While working, Martinelli and Peggy Carter were listening to The Captain America Adventure Program, but neither enjoyed it, so it was turned off. When Martinelli noticed Carter searching for places to live, she helped her realize how bad the places actually were. Martinelli then suggested that Carter live in a recently vacant room in the Griffith Hotel, were Martinelli also lived. However, Carter declined the offer, stating that she had an apartment to look at.

When Carter was waiting outside L&L Automat, Martinelli continued to convince her to live at the Griffith Hotel. After going through everything the hotel provided, Carter, who thought the place was perfect, remained hesitant, which made Martinelli think it was her that was the problem. However, Carter claimed it was that she would be a good neighbor and left, unknown to Martinelli that Carter's last roommate was killed because of her.

Carter eventually came around to Martinelli's suggestion, so she set up an interview for her at the hotel. Martinelli walked Carter through the hotel, informing her of the other tenants, before bringing her to Miriam Fry. While Carter had her interview, Martinelli stood outside the room, giving her friend looks of support as she listened in. When the interview was over, Carter was accepted to stay at the hotel, much to Martinelli's delight.[2]

"An eight hour shift, and I got a whole fifty cents in tips. The war's over, I thought we were all spending money again."
―Angie Martinelli to Peggy Carter[src]

The next morning, Martinelli joined the other tenants for breakfast. Martinelli, Carol, Peggy Carter, and Molly Bowden talked about how Bowden's boyfriend got into her bedroom the previous night. They then discussed Carter's love life, which Martinelli inquired about the man she saw her with. When Miriam Fry arrived and started talking about Harry Houdini, Martinelli knew something was not right, as she then witnessed Fry evict Bowden.

After working an eight-hour shift and only receiving a total of fifty cents in tips, Martinelli returned to the hotel and went to Carter's room to vent. Martinelli told Carter about her day, and decided they could drink and eat their sorrows, but Carter declined the offer, claiming she was tired, but really had a mission to go to the Stark Mansion to investigate the robbery. Offended by Carter's blunt rejection, Martinelli left Carter's room.

Martinelli meets Dottie Underwood

Upon exiting Carter's room, the two came across Fry in the hallway, who introduced them to Dottie Underwood, the new tenant who had just moved in. Martinelli greeted Underwood, but her very recent rejection from Carter had her still in an upset mood. Underwood attempted to make friends with the two, but Martinelli was not receptive and proceeded to leave and head to her room.[3]

The next night, when Martinelli was working, she noticed Peggy Carter enter the L&L Automat, she decided to act cold towards her, still offended by how she was treated last time they spoke. Carter sat down, and when Martinelli took her order, she decided to make amends by telling Martinelli about her day.

Martinelli accepted this offer, and Carter told her about how one of her coworkers died. To comfort Carter, Martinelli told her about how her cousin was killed by a bus, and the sudden shock it can have losing someone. Martinelli then asked if there was anything she can do to help, and Carter suggested Martinelli's previous offer to drink Schnapps together. Martinelli then went to give a customer his refill and then she clocked out and left with Carter.[3]

Martinelli knocked on the apartment door of Peggy Carter to let her know that supper was being served downstairs. Carter responded that she was not feeling well, so Martinelli offered her a Pepto, but she decided to come out and join her.

Martinelli and Peggy Carter stealing food

Arriving for super, Martinelli and Carter both stole some rolls, which Carter claimed she doesn't normally do. However, Martinelli put her at ease by revealing that most of the tenants also steal food in very intricate ways. Carter then told Martinelli that she was going to return to her room to eat, wanting to finish a book she was reading, although, she secretly had Howard Stark up there. The next day, Martinelli knocked on Dottie Underwood's door to see if she was coming to eat, which she replied that she would be down soon.[4] Two days later, when Underwood knocked on Martinelli's door, she told her that she was too consumed by ennui to go to work.[5]

Upon the request of Peggy Carter, Martinelli went to Miriam Fry to get a duplicate key for her after she lost hers, which ended up being a difficult process. When Martinelli went to work, she took some time doing her lines from an audition she didn't get. After receiving praise from Esther, Martinelli returned to her duties and gave Carter her key, complaining how she practically had to sign over her firstborn to Fry in order to obtain it.

Angie rejections

Martinelli reconsidering her career decisions

Carter complimented Martinelli on her performance, but she informed Carter of how the producers said it was the worst audition they had ever seen. Carter attempted to comfort Martinelli over losing the role, telling her not to let it get her down, but Martinelli revealed that she had been rejected for seven auditions. Evaluating these rejections, Martinelli believed it was time to give up her dream of acting, as her father had signed her up for secretary school. When Edwin Jarvis arrived to met with Carter, she told Martinelli they would talk more that night, and Martinelli left the two to their business.

Angie window

Later that day, when she was in her room, Martinelli looked outside her window to find Carter standing on the ledge. Before she could find out why she was there, she received a knock on the door by SSR agents to question her. Learning that the agents were there for Carter, Martinelli opened the door and the agents forced themselves inside and began searching the room. Jack Thompson and Daniel Sousa started to question Martinelli on her relationship with Carter.

Martinelli told them that they were friends and that she occasionally talked about her job at the New York Bell Company Office, not aware she too was an SSR agent. Sousa then asked Martinelli if she knew where Carter was, as Thompson walked towards the window. To protect Carter, Martinelli lied, saying she had gone to see her sick grandmother and then began crying to draw Thompson away from the window. Through this act, Thompson became distracted and went to comfort Martinelli, but the agents were uncomfortable, so they left.

Martinelli helps Peggy Carter into her room

Once they were all gone, Martinelli helped Carter inside her room. Carter praised Martinelli for helping her and being so convincing, and Martinelli told her that she always suspected Carter didn't work for a phone company. To help Carter get away, Martinelli called her brother to drop off a car for her. While using the phone, Martinelli decided to call her father and tell him she is sticking with acting, believing she should be on Broadway. Martinelli then returned to her room to inform Carter of the car and her decision about acting, which Carter was very supportive of.

Angie hug

Martinelli says goodbye to Peggy Carter

Martinelli then expressed that Carter was also good at pretending, having lied about who she was for a long time. The two then hugged, and Martinelli commented that she would love to learn what was going on with Carter, which she promised she would tell her. The two then said their goodbyes, telling each other to look after themselves. Carter would soon be discovered and arrested by the SSR, so Martinelli, along with all the other tenants went outside and watched as she was escorted into a car and driven away.[6]

Martinelli is brought to her new residence

"And you're saying we can stay here for free?"
"Since the unfortunate incidents at both your home and place of work, Mr. Stark has offered this residence to you and Miss Carter for as long as you might require it."
―Angie Martinelli and Edwin Jarvis[src]

After everything was resolved with Peggy Carter, Edwin Jarvis brought her and Martinelli to one of Howard Stark's residences, telling them that Stark wanted the two to live there for free.

Martinelli being amazed by her new place

Immediately entering the estate, Martinelli was completely gobsmacked by its sheer size. Jarvis listed some of the rooms in the house, as Martinelli continued to be amazed by it all, and shocked when it was considered quaint. When Martinelli asked if it was all free, Jarvis assured her that she and Carter could live there for as long as they required. Carter teased Martinelli about it being far from the theater district, but Martinelli assured Carter she would be fine with that. Thrilled by this, Martinelli then went to call her mother.[7]
