For the bomb owned by Sarge, see Atom Bomb

"Your father, he helped give us the atomic bomb. Now what kind of world would it be today if he was as selfish as you?"
Obadiah Stane to Tony Stark[src]

The Atomic Bomb is a thermonuclear weapon of immense power created as a result of Phastos' interference in humanity's technological advancements. They were notably used twice by the United States Armed Forces during World War II, dropping them on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan.

During the Chitauri Invasion in 2012, the World Security Council fired a nuclear missile towards New York City in order to eliminate the Chitauri, willing to sacrifice all the lives in Manhattan to do so. However, the missile was intercepted by Iron Man who redirected it at the Chitauri Command Center, ending the invasion.

History[]

World War II[]

Manhattan Project[]

After arriving on Earth, the Eternal Phastos, who had the power of invention and innovation, began to subtly introduce technological aspects to humanity. As a result of Phastos' interference, humanity was able to create the atomic bomb.[1] During World War II, the Allies created the Manhattan Project where Allied scientists, including Howard Stark, were tasked with producing atomic bombs.[2]

Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki[]

Little Boy is dropped on Hiroshima

In August 1945, the United States Air Force used two atomic bombs codenamed Little Boy and Fat Man against the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The massive loss of civilian life incurred in the atomic bombings resulted in Japan's official formal surrender, bringing an end to World War II.[3] Phastos, blaming the atomic bomb's creation on his interference and horrified by the Hiroshima incident, gave up on humanity, believing that they did not deserve to be saved.[1]

Roxxon Corporation[]

The Anomaly[]

Darkforce-Creation

An atomic bomb test goes awry

"Those were manufactured by Roxxon."
Jason Wilkes[src]

Roxxon Corporation became known for the creation of Atomic Bombs for use for the United States Armed Forces.[4] In 1947, Isodyne Energy was testing the effectiveness of an atomic bomb when a rift was created that sucked the military vehicles and personnel into it. When the rift closed, a black substance which was called Zero Matter was the only thing left.[3] After that test, the two additional bombs were placed in storage at the Roxxon Warehouse under heavy security.[4]

Obtaining a Bomb[]

"I need an atomic bomb."
Whitney Frost[src]

Whitney Frost decided that she needed an Atomic Bomb to replicate the circumstances which created the rift that released the Zero Matter when she absorbed the Zero Matter within the corpse of Jane Scott and wanted to increase her exposure to the substance. Peggy Carter and Edwin Jarvis overheard the declaration and Jason Wilkes told them that Frost must not be allowed to succeed. A race occurred between Frost, Calvin Chadwick, and her hired Manfredi Crime Family men against Carter, Jarvis, and selected members of the Strategic Scientific Reserve to get to the Atomic Bombs stored in the Roxxon Warehouse. Carter's team found the Bombs first and were successfully able to disarm their uranium cores before Frost could find them.[4]

Chitauri Invasion[]

Battle of New York[]

Iron Man Nuke

Iron Man flying the missile into a wormhole

"Until I'm certain my team can't hold it, I will not order a nuclear strike against a civilian population."
"If we don't hold them here, we lose everything."
"If I send that bird out, we already have."
Nick Fury and Gideon Malick[src]

In the midst of the Avengers' battle against the Chitauri in New York City, the World Security Council ordered S.H.I.E.L.D. to fire two nuclear missiles towards Manhattan in order to eliminate the Chitauri and prevent the invasion from expanding globally. However, when S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury disobeyed the order as doing so would also kill everyone in Manhattan, the World Security Council ordered two other agents to complete the task. While Fury successfully prevented one of the missiles from being deployed, he was unable to stop the other.

Fury then informed Tony Stark of the missile that was headed towards them. Realizing he could use it to their advantage, Stark intercepted the missile and redirected it into the Tesseract's wormhole towards the Chitauri Command Center in space. The missile, which destroyed the command center and resulted in all of the Chitauri on Earth immediately dying, effectively brought an end to the Chitauri Invasion.[5]

Ultron Offensive[]

Search for the Nuclear Codes[]

"He's in your files, he's in the Internet. What if he decides to access something a little more exciting?"
"Nuclear codes."
James Rhodes and Maria Hill[src]

Searching for a way to destroy humanity, Ultron attempted to digitally acquire the launch codes of all of Earth's nuclear weapons. However, he was continuously blocked by the remnants of J.A.R.V.I.S., who repeatedly changed the codes over and over, preventing Ultron from accessing the weapons. Undeterred, Ultron continued launching cyber attacks on countries with nuclear weapons, causing tensions to rise in the Middle East as nations began to blame one another. Ultimately, the Pentagon deployed War Machine to help de-escalate the situation.[6]

Secret Invasion[]

Road to a World War III[]

"For Christ's sake, Ritson, what have you got to lose?"
"She's right. Just delay the strike. If I'm wrong, you can send me to prison and flatten Russia."
Sonya Falsworth and Nick Fury[src]

In late 2026, Gravik and his Skrull Resistance set in motion their plan to claim Earth for themselves and destroy humanity. To do so, the Skrulls secretly replaced various humans of high importance with themselves, and set up a series of terrorist attacks to cause conflict between the United States of America and Russia, with the end-goal being an all-out nuclear war.[7]

Gravik's plan nearly came to fruition after the Skrull Resistance (posing as Russian terrorists) attempted to murder President Ritson at a bilateral meeting in London.[8] Though Ritson survived the attack thanks to Nick Fury's intervention, he was motivated to take nuclear action against Russia due to the manipulation of Raava (disguised as James Rhodes) who showed him satellite images of Russian tanks near the borders of Ukraine and Finland, as well as an image of New Skrullos, implying an alliance between Russia and the Skrulls.

As Ritson considered the strike, he was confronted by Nick Fury and Sonya Falsworth, who had infiltrated the hospital where he was recovering. They attempted to out Rhodes as a Skrull, and pleaded with Ritson to delay the nuclear strike. As Ritson contemplated what to do, Raava grabbed Falsworth's gun and attempted to fire at Fury, but was shot in the head by him first. Seeing Raava turn back into a Skrull convinced Ritson of Fury's truth and the nuclear strike was called off.[9]

Alternate Universe Versions[]

Thor's Party[]

"You're not serious. We're not gonna kaboom him."
"We're talking about the fate of the planet."
Jane Foster and Maria Hill[src]

As Thor's party began to wreak havoc across planet Earth, acting S.H.I.E.L.D. director Maria Hill devised a plan to kill the Asgardian with atomic bombs should Captain Marvel fail to subdue him. As Captain Marvel fought Thor in remote Siberia, Hill and Brock Rumlow prepared to launch the bombs. However, before they could be deployed, Thor was confronted by his mother Frigga, who questioned his presence on Earth. Amused, Hill decided to call off the nuclear strike, much to Rumlow's disappointment.[10]

Age of Ultron[]

Tony Stark's final moments - W108

Iron Man dies to Ultron's nuclear holocaust

"Ultron's going after the nuclear codes. I don't know how much longer we can hold him off."
"We have to take out the satellite network. He won't be able to launch the nukes without them."
Iron Man and Black Widow[src]

Having become nearly invincible due to his Vibranium body and the power of the Mind Stone, Ultron directly attacked the NEXUS Internet Hub in Oslo, desiring the nuclear launch codes of every major world power. Here, Ultron was confronted by Thor, Captain America, Hulk, and Iron Man who aimed to stop him, but were swiftly defeated. Upon accessing the nuclear codes, Ultron immediately launched all of Earth's nuclear weapons on humanity, nearly rendering them extinct and decimating the planet.[11]

Capabilities[]

The atomic bomb was a powerful weapon, capable of destroying entire cities such as Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The horrifying bombings took a toll on the world, and people became very frightened of their capabilities following the display in Japan. The blast was powerful enough to destroy the Chitauri Command Center and, as a result, kill all of the Chitauri who had invaded New York City, and an alternate S.H.I.E.L.D. believed its blast to be powerful enough to kill Thor. Testing on the bomb by Isodyne Energy resulting in a rift to the Dark Dimension, which allowed Zero Matter to leak through.
