In World War II, Peggy Carter's brother, Michael Carter had died, convincing Peggy to join the war. However, he had faked his death. In 1947, Jack Thompson needed dirt on Peggy to get her to return to New York. He found redacted files on "M. Carter" that highlighted war crimes. However, these were Michael's redacted files.[2][3]

As Jack Thompson had just finished the Isodyne Energy case in Los Angeles, he started packing for his trip back to New York City. While packing, he received a phone call informing him that Peggy Carter would not be coming with him and would be taking more vacation time in Los Angeles, which he was fine with. Thompson then heard a knock on his hotel room door and thinking it was hotel management asking him to came to open it. As he opened the door, he was shot once in the chest and fell straight to the floor. The attacker then proceeded to walk into the room, grabbing the redacted file on Carter.[1]
