"I thought your thing was a sword?"
"We've been hired to stop an inter-dimensional beast from feeding on those batteries and I'm going to stop it with a sword?"
"It's just swords were your thing and guns were mine, but I guess we're both doing guns now. I just didn't know that."

The Battle on Sovereign was an open confrontation between the Guardians of the Galaxy, who had been hired by the Sovereign's High Priestess Ayesha, and the Abilisk.

Background

"What should we do next? Something good, something bad? Bit of both?"
"We'll follow your lead, Star-Lord."
"A bit of both."
Star-Lord and Gamora[src]

Sometime after being hailed as heroes for helping defeat Ronan the Accuser and saving the planet Xandar, the Guardians of the Galaxy were hired by Ayesha, the High Priestess of the Sovereign, to defeat the Abilisk, a beast who was slowly devouring her home planet's power source. In exchange, Ayesha promised to release Gamora's sister Nebula, whom the Sovereign had arrested following the Battle of Xandar, into their custody.[2]

Battle

"The beast's hide is too thick be pierced on the outside. I must cut through it from the inside."

The Guardians of the Galaxy fight the Abilisk

When the Abilisk arrived, the Guardians of the Galaxy got ready to fight as Groot plugged in Star-Lord's music and began dancing while the rest were thrown around by the Abilisk. The Guardians flew around the Abilisk and fired at it but all of their attacks didn't work. Drax then stated to Gamora that he thought that the Abilsk has to be cut through on the inside and proceeded to jump into its mouth. Star-Lord then came up with a real plan to shoot the cut on its neck.

Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon distracted it by flying above it to give Gamora a shot at its neck. Gamora ran out of ammo so she got out her sword and cut through the Abilisk's neck killing it and releasing Drax.[2]

The Guardians meet with the Sovereign

"What are they called again?"
"Anulax Batteries."
"...Harbulary batteries."
"That's nothing like what I just said. But they are worth thousands of Units a piece which is why the Sovereign hired us to protect them. Careful what you say around these folks, they are easily offended, the cost of transgression is death."

Immediately following the battle, the Guardians met with Ayesha, who held up her end of the bargain and handed over Nebula.

Ayesha then started talking about Quill's parentage which he was unaware of who his father was at the time. As the Guardians left, Rocket revealed to Drax that he had stolen some batteries.

As the Guardians left the planet, a fleet of Sovereign drones appeared and opened fire on the Milano, starting a skirmish that ended with the fleet being destroyed by Ego and the Guardians crash-landing on the nearby planet of Berhert.[2]
