"One of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s most important advances in recent years. It uses adaptive materials to contain Enhanced individuals and actually neutralizes their powers."
Jeffrey Mace[src]

The Containment Modules are pods that can be sent to specific locations indicated by a tracking device planted on the ground. They are used to contain Inhumans until they can be trained to control their powers. A Containment Module was later converted as a room for Alya Fitz and a Quantum Tunnel.

History[]

Design[]

"We built this module to help those in transition."
Daisy Johnson to Rosalind Price[src]

As Leo Fitz designed S.H.I.E.L.D.'s new flagship aircraft Zephyr One, the Inhuman Outbreak occurred. To accommodate the agency's mission to contain and protect newly emerging Inhumans, Fitz also developed the Containment Module.[1]

Escaping the ATCU[]

"Why isn't this box liquefying or this plane or whatever the hell this is?"
"It's poly-tectic adaptive materials. Each module can be customized. So, you're safe in there, and we're safe from you."
Joey Gutierrez and Daisy Johnson[src]

In Seattle, Lance Hunter, Daisy Johnson, and Alphonso Mackenzie rescued the newly transformed Joey Gutierrez, who had gained the Inhuman power to melt metal, from the ATCU. After the S.H.I.E.L.D. team secured Gutierrez in an alleyway, Hunter summoned a Containment Module with its remote beacon. Gutierrez was then ushered inside the module, which carried him up to the safety of Zephyr One. On board the aircraft, the module successfully prevented Gutierrez from melting Zephyr One until he arrived at the Playground. There, the Module was transferred to a larger room made of the same adaptive material, where Bobbi Morse debriefed Gutierrez.

Later, in Washington, D.C., Lance Hunter and Phil Coulson were detained by agents of the Advanced Threat Containment Unit aboard the Metro after confronting Rosalind Price. One agent confiscated and inspected Hunter's bag but accidentally activated the Containment Module's remote beacon. The module promptly came crashing down into the subway car, giving Coulson and Hunter a means of escape.[2]

Rescue of Jemma Simmons[]

After S.H.I.E.L.D. successfully returned Agent Jemma Simmons to Earth through the Monolith, Simmons rested inside a module as she received medical treatment, with Leo Fitz at her side, onboard Zephyr One.[3]

Inhuman Containment[]

"I'll reconfigure the containment module, if we can even get her in there."
"Thanks."
"So, you do that remotely?"
"Exactly. The poly-tectic material then adapts to the powers we're dealing with."
Jemma Simmons, Daisy Johnson, and Lincoln Campbell[src]

At the Playground, Andrew Garner stood in the safety of a Containment Module to observe the traumatized Alisha Whitley, whose clone he had killed earlier as Lash.[4]

Daisy Johnson showcased the Containment Module's features during of Rosalind Price's tour of Zephyr One. The pair then briefly argued over whether S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Containment Module or the ATCU's Suspension Gel matrices were more humane for transitioning Inhumans.[5]

Lash-Trapped-CT

Lash is captured by S.H.I.E.L.D.

S.H.I.E.L.D. and the ATCU undertook a joint operation to rescue Melinda May and capture Lash, the Inhuman alter ego of Andrew Garner, at an abandoned building. Alphonso Mackenzie secured the Containment Module, while the ATCU operatives and Lincoln Campbell lured Garner to the module in the building lobby. There, May appealed to her ex-husband and coaxed him into reverting before firing on him with a pistol. Garner stumbled backwards into the module and transformed, but May quickly closed the doors and released a gas to sedate him.[5]

In the hopes of finding Garner a cure, S.H.I.E.L.D. handed custody of Garner's containment module and sedative gas to the ATCU, which trucked the module to Endotex Labs. However, as part of Operation Spotlight, S.H.I.E.L.D. transmitted an encrypted homing signal through Garner's module which breached the lab's mainframe and prompted the ATCU to request security contractors to the facility.[6]

During the same operation, Phil Coulson brought Rosalind Price down to a permanent containment room, with a module inside, during a tour of the Playground. Coulson locked Price inside the room to interrogate her over her true loyalties but released her after she realized her superior Gideon Malick was HYDRA.[6]

Project Distant Star Return[]

The HYDRA faction leader Gideon Malick, as the head of the Advanced Threat Containment Unit's science division, covertly ordered Garner's Containment Module to be flown and transferred to Project Distant Star Return. Malick approached and attempted to persuade Garner of his goodwill, in the hope of recruiting the psychologist to an Inhuman army. Malick later allowed his new ally Grant Ward to approach the module, taunt Garner, and flood the chamber with a mustard gas toxin to provoke Garner's transformation.[6]

Gideon Malick had Andrew Garner's Containment Module, along with the ATCU's Inhumans contained in Suspension Gel chambers, transferred to the HYDRA Castle to prepare for the arrival of HYDRA's Inhuman god. During S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Attack on the HYDRA Castle, Jemma Simmons escaped Malick's captivity and found Garner's module. At Garner's urging, Simmons opened the module and allowed him, as the monstrous Lash, to escape and kill her HYDRA pursuers. Later, an enraged Malick found Lash's module opened, alongside the Inhumans massacred by the beast.

After Phil Coulson and Leo Fitz crossed through the Monolith back to Earth, they joined Alphonso Mackenzie and Daisy Johnson in taking refuge from HYDRA attackers inside Garner's abandoned Containment Module. As Melinda May then bombarded the castle with missiles, the agents used the module to launch back to the safety of Zephyr One and reunite with their colleagues.[7]

Adapting to New Powers[]

YoYo-ContainmentModule

Yo-Yo Rodriguez is held in the Module

In Bogotá, S.H.I.E.L.D. rescued Alphonso Mackenzie and captured the Inhuman Elena Rodriguez, who was incapacitated and placed in a Containment Module. When she woke up again, she tried to escape by running against the module's walls, always snapping back to her starting point. S.H.I.E.L.D. interrogated her within the module but released her after realizing the corruption of the National Police of Colombia.[8]

When Carl Creel accompanied General Glenn Talbot to the Playground, S.H.I.E.L.D. had Creel placed in a module in a holding cell. There, Jemma Simmons and Leo Fitz asked Creel about his powers as he absorbed and transformed his cells into the module's adaptive material.

George Talbot, rescued by S.H.I.E.L.D., rested inside a module aboard Zephyr One while his father watched.[9]

Daisy Johnson and Leo Fitz retreated to Zephyr One aboard the Containment Module, along with a captive Oscar, after Fitz was shot with a Nitramene suspension during the Raid on Easterling Farms. After interrogating the Watchdog, Fitz realized that the module's liquid nitrogen cooling jets would be sufficient to freeze the suspension and disarm the explosive.[10]

Hive's Campaign[]

Giyera Escaping the Containment Module

R. Giyera telekinetically prying the module doors open.

After being captured, R. Giyera was imprisoned in a Containment Module. However, shortly before the Module was closed, he was able to steal a belt buckle, allowing him to defeat the Module's Inhuman-proof design, escape the Module, and hijack Zephyr One.

When S.H.I.E.L.D. attacked Hive and the Kree Reapers, the team escaped Union City by summoning a Containment Module.

When Daisy Johnson returned to S.H.I.E.L.D. she was contained in a module in case of after effects of Hive's mind control. When attempting to confront the evil Inhuman, she used the module to board Zephyr One. She was again imprisoned in the module by R. Giyera and let out by Melinda May and Leo Fitz.

Holding Ghost Rider[]

Ghost Rider breaks himself free

"You really think this thing can hold me?"
"It's contained a lot more dangerous people than you."
"Is that a dare?"
Robbie Reyes and Phil Coulson[src]

Ghost Rider was imprisoned in the module when apprehended by Phil Coulson and Alphonso Mackenzie but was let out when they reached an agreement.

Ghost Rider was once again put in the module along with Quake and his brother, Gabe Reyes to hide from Jeffrey Mace but when exposed, Ghost Rider managed to break out of the cell.[11]

Detaining Ophelia[]

Ophelia woke up a Containment Chamber with Leo Fitz after the Escape from the Ivanov Oil Platform. Reacting inappropriately to Fitz rejecting her, she tried to teleport out of the Containment Chamber with him but to no avail due to the presence of Quantum Field Disruptors. Angry, Ophelia violently attacked Fitz, who managed to escape the Chamber thanks to Agents Piper, Davis and Prince. The three agents believed her to be safely contained, but Fitz revealed that teleportation was not her only power. As if on cue, Ophelia destroyed the Quantum Field Disruptors using an electrokinetic power and escaped the Chamber, teleporting near U.S. Army soldiers who were confronting Fitz and his colleagues.[12]

Secured by the U.S. Military[]

When S.H.I.E.L.D. was publicly disavowed after Aida's assassination attempt on Glenn Talbot, the United States Air Force confiscated S.H.I.E.L.D.'s equipment left behind at the Playground and stored them in a warehouse at Blue Raven Ridge. Among this equipment were two Containment Modules, one of which was stored aboard Zephyr One.

Six months later, Leo Fitz and Lance Hunter infiltrated the base and escaped with Zephyr One and its attached Containment Modules. Hunter landed and cloaked the aircraft outside River's End for S.H.I.E.L.D.'s retrieval.[13]

Alternate Reality Versions[]

Destroyed Earth[]

In 2091, the Zephyr One was used as a base of the True Believers and the Containment Module was on board the vehicle. As Melinda May was rescued by the Believers, she woke up next to the Containment Module and saw the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo printed on it.[14] Later, the prime timeline S.H.I.E.L.D. agents infiltrated Lighthouse using the module.[15]

Capabilities[]

"It's made out of adaptive material, so it can contain all sorts of powers. It's also bulletproof, which comes in handy when people like you shoot at people like me."
Daisy Johnson to Rosalind Price[src]

The Containment Module is among the most versatile pieces of equipment in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s arsenal; it allows the agency to safely transport agents into or out of the field, to contain threats, or to protect valuable assets.

The interior of the Containment Modules is made from a poly-tectic adaptive material which is S.H.I.E.L.D.'s most advanced chemical compound.[11] This highly durable and bulletproof material is capable of withstanding a wide range of superhuman powers, and S.H.I.E.L.D. can calibrate each module to accommodate the specific powers of the individual being contained. The material was capable of containing Joey Gutierrez's melting abilities and to Yo-Yo Rodriguez's superhuman speed. Each module is also outfitted with a mechanism to release gas into the chamber; S.H.I.E.L.D. typically uses this to release a sedative capable of subduing the likes of Lash.<<ref name="AoS308">

Since the modules are powerful enough to contain enhanced individuals, the Containment Module is perfectly capable of detaining ordinary humans and serving as a prison cell. Furthermore, the module also offers those contained inside protection from external threats, whether superhuman or conventional.

The modules are equipped with four powerful jet thrusters that can either propel the module up into the air or control the module's descent to the ground. The module's durability and maneuverability thus allow it to function as a rapid way to remove assets from dangerous situations or to surgically deploy agents into the field. To call a containment module down from Zephyr One, agents in the field can deploy a remote beacon on the ground, and a module will promptly land on top of the device.

LoN Escape Module

A Containment Module docking with Zephyr One's ventral bay.

In order to transport and store the modules, S.H.I.E.L.D. uses Zephyr One, which possesses a ventral bay linked to the aircraft's loading hangar. With this bay, Zephyr One can intercept and bring modules into the aircraft's main body, where agents can easily access it, or it can deploy and launch those modules to the ground. While modules are typically stored inside the aircraft, they can also hang beneath the jet, concealed from view of interior.[11] These pods can be transferred from Zephyr One into one of several larger holding rooms made from similar material in the Playground, which allows S.H.I.E.L.D. to transfer prisoners or enhanced assets into a more permanent secure location. [2]

Modules are equipped with datapads on the exterior which monitor the vitals of contained individuals and the environment inside the chamber. For agents with the proper clearance, these monitors act as control panels that can open the module doors, release sedative gas, or control other pod functions. Each unit computer also has a high capacity transmitter that can send out a pulse traceable by S.H.I.E.L.D. or that can upload software into any computer network it identifies in its vicinity.[6]

In chronological order:

Trivia[]

  • R. Giyera, Ghost Rider, Tucker Shockley, and two Shrike hosts are the only individuals known to have escaped a containment module. Giyera was able to pry the module doors open telekinetically with a seatbelt latch, whereas Ghost Rider was able to break down the module doors.
    • During Ghost Rider's escape, Phil Coulson claimed that no one had yet broken out of a module. R. Giyera's prior escape, which Coulson had witnessed, proves this statement untrue.
    • Of these escapees, Tucker Shockley and the Shrike hosts were the only ones to completely destroy their module. Shockley destroyed one module with his Inhuman power to self-detonate, whereas the Shrike shattered another module when they attempted to merge and form the Shrike Tower.
