- "I wanna stay in Ohio."
- ―Natasha Romanoff[src]
Ohio is a state located in the midwestern region of the United States of America.
History[]
Astronaut Senator[]
Ohio elected former astronaut John Glenn to become senator, and he remained senator in the 1980s. In winter of 1984, Glenn went to an air show and greeted people. Erik Del Orbe, Tom Bianchi, Garrett Pierre, Carol Danvers, and Maria Rambeau were among the people who waited to see Glenn.[1]
Russians Undercover[]
- "We infiltrated the North Institute in Ohio. It was a front for S.H.I.E.L.D. scientists. Actually, it was HYDRA scientists at that time."

In 1992, the Red Room Academy sent Melina Vostokoff and Alexei Shostakov on an undercover mission in Mount Vernon, Ohio, to infiltrate S.H.I.E.L.D.'s North Institute and pick their research on brain functions - which was actually being done by HYDRA, wanting to perfect the mind control started by the Winter Soldier Program. They would pose as a married couple, with two prospect Black Widows, Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova, being their daughters.[2]
In 1995, they accomplished their mission, with Shostakov proceeding to burn the North Institute and the family running to a nearby airport to fly away to Cuba, facing resistance from HYDRA agents and local police along the way.[3]
Centipede Project[]
- "Name's Brian Hayward. Stationed in Afghanistan for three years, then fell off the radar when he got back."
"Only living relative – sister, Laura, sophomore at the University of Ohio."
"She's our best shot at finding Hayward. You and I will go talk to her. Have May set a course for Cleveland." - ―Grant Ward, Skye and Phil Coulson[src]
Phil Coulson and Grant Ward traveled to Cleveland in order to talk to Laura Hayward, the sister of Brian Hayward, one of the Centipede Soldiers that broke Edison Po out of the Havenworth Federal Penitentiary. Coulson and Ward drove to the University of Ohio to meet Laura, chatting about women on the route, with Coulson revealing his former relationship to a cellist living in Portland, that ended with his death during the Attack on the Helicarrier. Coulson still cared about her, even though he could not reveal his survival.
Coulson was informed by Melinda May and Skye about the identity of Po's only visit in prison, Raina, who, according to Michael Peterson, acted as a recruiter for the Centipede Project. Coulson deduced they wanted Po as the leader to the Centipede Soldiers due to his military background in tactical strategy.
Ward approached Laura as she exited her class, disguised as a member of the Ohio State Gaming Commission, telling her they were trying to contact his brother Brian because he won $50,000 in the lottery. Laura did not reveal that she was in contact with her brother, and dismissed Ward. Ward asked Coulson why he wanted to use that story, and Coulson revealed he intended to use a highly suspicious approach so that Laura contacted his brother to warn him, and they could trace the call, locating him in Oakland.[4]
Escape from Brynmore Psychiatric Facility[]
Brynmore Psychiatric Facility was built in Muskingum County, Ohio as a federal-run institution for the criminally insane. The building was used by S.H.I.E.L.D. to house mentally unstable Index candidates in a clandestine sub-basement under the North wing of the complex. Although the entire sub-basement was for use by S.H.I.E.L.D., there were only two prisoners being held there: John Bruno and David Angar.
Angar sparked the interest of Calvin Zabo, who was assembling a team of gifted individuals on the Index to fight against S.H.I.E.L.D. Zabo, Karla Faye Gideon, Wendell Levi, and Francis Noche arrived at the front gate of the facility, pretending to be lost. Gideon assassinated the guard, and Levi disabled all power and communications in the facility. Noche used his strength to bend the gate so the group could enter the building.
Broyles informed Phil Coulson about the situation on the Brynmore premises. Zabo's group had wreaked havoc, releasing dangerous prisoners from their confines while the power was out. Bobbi Morse recovered security camera footage of the villains before the image was interrupted. Coulson quickly realized what Zabo was trying to achieve: freeing the captives in the sub-level basement.
Morse and Coulson moved in, seeing if the two deadly prisoners housed below ground were still there or if they had escaped with Skye's father. Bruno came from the shadows and attacked Morse, but she quickly defeated him despite his fighting skills. They found Angar's cell empty with "Fight On" inscribed on the wall by Zabo, referring to Coulson's high school slogan in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.[5]
Attack on Lincoln Campbell[]
- "Look I get that you're trying to build a life here."
"Yes, a normal life so stay out of it. Please." - ―Daisy Johnson and Lincoln Campbell[src]
Lincoln Campbell returned to his studies and began work in Cincinnati Memorial Hospital. Daisy Johnson and Alphonso Mackenzie reached the hospital and confronted Campbell in one of the rooms, and tried to convince him to return to S.H.I.E.L.D.. As the conversation between Campbell and Mackenzie heated up, the hospital lights started flickering. Johnson thought Campbell was causing it and told him to calm down. Campbell told her it was not him. The lights then went out, caused by Lash.
After he killed a security guard at the hospital wing's entrance, he asked a nurse where to find Campbell, before seeing him down a hallway. The battle started when Johnson and Campbell attempted to stop Lash, but only continued to escalate. Lash was slowed down by the combined attacks of Campbell and Johnson, but it did not completely stop him. Lash blasted a hole in the wall and tried to escape, but Johnson, Campbell, and Mackenzie eventually found him. Shortly after, Lash was forced to retreat after Johnson blasted a hole in the floor, by which he fell through and escaped.[6]
Assassination of Vasily Karpov[]
- "Mission report, December 16th, 1991."
"Who are you?"
"My name is Zemo. I will repeat my question. Mission report, December 16th, 1991?" - ―Helmut Zemo and Vasily Karpov[src]
In 2016, Helmut Zemo located Vasily Karpov, one of the former leaders of the Winter Soldier Program, who was in hiding in Cleveland. Zemo attacked and subdued Karpov before tying him upside down above a sink slowly filling with water. Zemo took the Winter Soldier Book from Karpov's HYDRA files and introduced himself, demanding information about Howard and Maria Stark's assassination, but Karpov refused to speak. Zemo left, taking his belongings while Karpov drowned to death.[7]
