"What if I fail to return?"
"Be brave, my lord."
―Manzini and English Nobleman[src]

Lord Manzini was an English nobleman and a member of a cult that worshipped the Inhuman, Hive. In 1839, he partook in a ceremony where he was chosen to be sent through a portal to Hive's domain, an alien planet named Maveth, in an attempt to rescue or serve him. Hive would kill Manzini and absorb his flesh to survive, though his supplies would later be used by Jemma Simmons to escape Maveth.

"Will he come back?"
"Our best minds are working to understand this, but as far as we know, in all of history... no one has ever returned."

Manzini partakes in the ceremony

Manzini was a member of a cult that worshipped the Inhuman leader, Hive. As Hive had been banished from Earth and sent through a portal called the monolith, the cult would routinely hold meetings where they would hold a lottery; each of the cult's most prolific members would draw a stone from a bag, but whoever drew the single white stone would be sent through the monolith to rescue, or at least serve, their leader.[1]

During one such meeting, held in a castle in England, Manzini was unlucky enough to draw the white stone from the bag. He was given a satchel containing supplies, including a bottle of wine, by his fellow lords to use on his journey, as well as a sword which he sheathed before being escorted to the room containing the monolith. As he entered, he worried about the possibility that he may not return to Earth; Lord Thornally told him to be brave, knowing his chances of survival were close to zero. Manzini was thrust into the room, and the door was swiftly closed behind him and blocked with wooden boards. Terrified, Manzini faced the monolith before it absorbed him, causing Manzini to scream as he was sent through the portal to the alien planet Maveth.[1]

Serving Hive and Death[]

"The stars. Fitz, that's the answer."
Jemma Simmons[src]

Upon arriving on Maveth, Manzini survived long enough to arrive in the No-Fly Zone, the location on Maveth where Hive resided. There, he lost his bag of supplies and his sword, and was killed by Hive, who used his parasites to absorb Manzini's flesh so that he could survive.

Centuries later, Jemma Simmons, who had been absorbed by the Monolith, would journey to the No-Fly Zone and find Manzini's belongings, as well as his skeleton. Among them was a device contained in a wooden box that could measure the stars. This would lead Simmons to realise that the movements of the stars was what caused the Monolith portal to open, leading to her becoming the first person to escape Maveth.[2]

Equipment[]

"May our gifts see you through the journey."
―Lord Thornally to Lord Manzini[src]

Weapons[]

  • Sword: Manzini was given a sword for his journey to Maveth, so that he could stand a chance against any opponents he may face. The sword wound up embedded in the ground, where it was found by Jemma Simmons centuries later.

Other Equipment[]

  • Monolith: Manzini was sent through the monolith to Maveth in the hope that he could rescue Hive.
  • Satchel: For his journey to Maveth, Manzini was given a satchel containing a variety of different items or tools for his survival.
    • Sextant: Manzini was given a sextant, a device that could measure the distance between celestial objects, for his mission, as the monolith portal only opened when the moons of Maveth were aligned in a certain way. His sextant was later used by Jemma Simmons to escape Maveth.
    • Wine: A bottle of wine was one of the supplies Manzini was given for his journey to Maveth. Though Hive would kill Manzini before he could drink it, Jemma Simmons and Will Daniels would drink it centuries later before their attempt to escape Maveth, though Simmons would remark it tasted awful, likely due to its age.
