Plot[]

AnatolyPrison

Eight years ago, back in Russia, Anatoly and Vladimir Ranskahov were serving their sentence in Utkin Prison. As they undergo constant tortures and beatings, their cellmates keep dying and Anatoly remarks that Vladimir will soon remain as the only one. However, Vladimir makes a shiv out of the bones of their dead cellmate, whose body was left in their cell to rot, and says that they will be escaping that night. Anatoly asks his brother will they return back to Moscow, but Vladimir replies that they should set their sights on America, where they can live like kings.

Presently, the Russian Mafia gets targeted by the man in the mask, as Anatoly barely escapes from the vigilante. Afterwards, Murdock goes to Claire Temple, so she could treat his wounds, and suggests that Murdock should wear a body armor to protect himself. As the two talk about their previous encounter with the Russian Mafia, Murdock gives Temple a burner phone, so they could keep in touch, in case Murdock needs medical help. Murdock tells Temple that his target is Wilson Fisk, who is behind the criminal activity in Hell's Kitchen, so he will be pressuring the Russian Mafia until someone talks.

Vladimir-Ranskahov-argues-with-Wesley

James Wesley visits the Veles Taxi Garage to meet with Vladimir and Anatoly, informing them that Prohaszka's holding were successfully transfered to them, which will increase their distribution network. Vladimir and Antoly speak to Wesley about the issue with the masked man, who is aware of Fisk's name and searches for him, which means that the situation is urgent. Bringing up the problems that affect the Russian Mafia, Wesley offers them Fisk's help but Vladimir refuses, saying that it would be a takeover. Anatoly, however, is more interested in Fisk's offer, but Vladimir refuses to budge and says that they will deal with the vigilante on their own, but they need to wake Semyon up first.

Karen-Page-explains-her-story-to-Urich

Karen Page and Ben Urich discuss the Union Allied Construction story, but Urich says that since Union Allied filed for bankrupcy, they have no leads. He also mentions that both Rance and Clyde Farnum are dead, saying that Page is incredibly lucky and should quit while she can. Page insists that they must look into this and find some kind of trail, but Urich replies that as a journalist, he cannot print anything without credible sources. Page brings up Urich's stories from his past and asks why is Urich so reluctant to chase that one, to which he says that he got older and much less stupid.

Vladimir and Anatoly visit Semyon in the hospital, who is still in coma after he was interrogated and thrown into the dumpster by the man in the mask. Anatoly says that they lost their way in America and Fisk's help could help get back on their feet but Vladimir insists that they are better off without him. Vladimir injects Semyon with a shot of epinephrine, forcing him to wake up, and he tells them about a woman who was with the Masked Man, before dying. A group of thugs break into Temple's apartment but find it empty, however, they encounter Santino there.

Wesley reports to Fisk about the Russian Mafia, informing him that Anatoly seems to be more inclined to take their offer than his brother, as Fisk wants to handle it quietly. Wesley asks him what should they do with the masked man, and Fisk decides that if the Russians cannot handle him, Fisk will have to find another solution. While Wesley stays behind, Fisk goes to Scene Contempo Gallery and meets with Vanessa Marianna. Fisk invites Marianna to a dinner but she is busy working, which he understands and Marianna gets surprised that Fisk did not try to use his money. Fisk says that he is not interested in the woman that can be bought and Marianna agrees to have dinner with him, as the two introduce themselves properly.

Foggy-Nelson-Murdock-S1E4

Working on the case, Foggy Nelson talks with Murdock about their practice not being satisfactory, pondering if they should have stayed in Landman and Zack. Murdock tells Nelson that they are making a difference by helping people, which makes an empty office space worth it. Murdock then receives a call from Temple and hears her screams, realizing that she is being attacked by someone. Murdock rushes to the Apartment 412 but the Russian Mafia already captured Temple and drove away.

Page attends the auction of the Union Allied's property, where she also meets Urich, who says that she is in danger there. Urich points at two suspicious people at the auction, who are not bidding, which means that they came there for another reason, just like Page did. Urich tells Page that she should make the bid in the next hour, otherwise she might attract their attention, but Page does not have any money.

The Russian thugs bring captured Temple to their garage, as she is unable to fight back. Murdock approaches Santino, who tells him that the Russian Mafia threatened his mother, so he had no choice but to tell them where Temple lives. Murdock says that it was not his fault and asks Santino about any clues that could lead him to where did the thugs take Temple. Santino tells Murdock that when they captured Temple, they put her into the taxi, like they owned it.

Vanessa-Marianna-Dinner-Wine

Fisk and Marianna dine at the Brasserie restaurant, and Marianna notices Fisk's awkwardness, to which he says that he was simply preoccupied most of the time. The two discuss who quick New York City is changing, although Fisk states that it is not changing fast enough. Marianna says that it is a shame that the city might lose its character, which lets Fisk know that she did not grow up there. Fisk tells Marianna about his time away from New York, which made him realize that the city is a part of him, and he desires to make it a better place for people like Marianna.

Claire-Temple-Tortured

Sergei and Dmitry torture Temple and demand her to tell them the name of the masked man, but Temple says that he never told her his name. Sergei almost kills Temple with his bat, but Dmitry stops him, saying that Vladimir needs her alive. Suddenly, the lights in the garage gets turned off and Temple laughs that now the Russian Mafia can ask the masked man's name from the vigilante himself. Using the darkness to his advantage, the Masked Man incapacitates all the thugs, so Sergei tries to take Temple hostage to defend himsef. The vigilante easily takes Sergei down and Temple knocks him down, before breaking down, so the Masked Man comforts her.

Page leaves the auction and meets with Urich again, saying that she bought some office equipment, sending a bill to Nelson and Murdock. Page asks why did Urich come to the auction, to which he replies that he only told Page to stay put and never said that he will not be chasing the story himself. Page suggests that the people behind the Union Allied were re-purchasing the property and it could be used to trace them but Urich warns her that underestimating their enemies is a sure way to get killed. As the two agree to work on the story in secret, Urich tells Page to sign the NDA and take Union Allied's money, saying that since Urich never signed anything, he can print the story regardless.

Anatoly-Ranskahov-accepts-offer

Vladimir and Anatoly return to the garage and witness the aftermath of the masked man rescuing Temple from their subordinates. Anatoly insists that they are in need of Fisk's help and although Vladimir is strongly against bowing to him, Anatoly decides to go bow for both of them. Vladimir hesitantly allows Anatoly to go and negotiate with Fisk, while he is having a good time with Marianna. Anatoly storms into the restaurant and calls out to Fisk that they accept his offer, which confuses Marianna. Fisk abruptly ends their date and quickly gets her out of the restaurant and orders Wesley to put Anatoly in the car for the time being.

Back at the Nelson and Murdock Law Office, Page shows the office equipment she bought to Nelson, admitting that she charged the office. Page quickly adds that she will be getting some money soon from signing an NDA for Union Allied but Nelson is not mad at all, as he recently talked with Murdock about the lack of any office equipment.

Claire-Temple-Rescued-S1E4

Murdock apologizes for putting Temple in danger, but she says that it was her choice to get Murdock out of that dumpster. Murdock says that he wants to make the city a safer place but he keeps bringing pain to people around him, to which Temple reminds him about the people he saved, just like her. Temple tells Murdock to listen to her heartbeat and he senses her fear, before revealing to her that his real name is Matthew.

Wilson-Fisk-murders-Russian

Fisk walks Marianna to her apartment but Anatoly's appearance soured their evening, as Marianna is not sure how to feel about Fisk. As Anatoly and Wesley drive in the car, Anatoly says that he wanted to meet with Fisk in person to put all the bad blood in the past, but Wesley replies that the past is not something that goes away easily. Suddenly, the furious Fisk drags Anatoly out of the car and attacks him, enraged that he embarassed Fisk in front of Marianna. Anatoly tries to fight back but Fisk is relentless and kills Anatoly by cutting his head off with a car door. Fisk then orders Wesley to send Anatoly's remains to his brother, and although Wesley remarks that it would start the war, Fisk replies that he is counting on it.
