"The Index?"
"It's a list S.H.I.E.L.D. keeps of people and objects with powers."
Skye and Jemma Simmons[src]

The Index is a relatively short list of people and objects with super-powers kept by S.H.I.E.L.D.

When a person with a power or ability is discovered, a team is sent out to file an "Index Asset Evaluation and Intake" report.[1] It is followed by a full psychological evaluation and threat assessment.[2]

People on the Index are often assigned a case-worker and generally advised to keep their abilities private. Agent Quan Chen was the supervisor of Chan Ho Yin;[3] Director Phil Coulson chose himself as Skye's supervisor.[2]

Some individuals on the Index are deemed too dangerous and are killed, and referred to as being "crossed off".[4]

Index[]

Terms[]

"'Gifted' is both insufficient and too broad. I believe there are two categories we're dealing with. Enhanced is what I'd suggest we call people like David Angar, Mike Peterson... people whose gifts were man made. Skye, Raina... this was inside them, a part of them."
Jemma Simmons and Phil Coulson[src]

Originally, all powered individuals listed on the Index had varying sources and applications of their abilities and all were referred to as "gifted". However, Jemma Simmons later proposed that a minimum of two listing categories be created as she believed that the term "gifted" was both too specific and too general to describe listed abilities.[2]

  • Enhanced: Those who have man-made abilities due to science or experimentation.
  • Gifted: Those who naturally possess abilities. All Inhumans fall under this category.

Individuals[]

"Sir, these people are on the Index, but they're not exactly gifted."
"They were considered highly dangerous. A larger part of the Index functions as more of a watchlist."
Bobbi Morse and Phil Coulson[src]

Former Candidates[]

The following individuals were removed or rejected from the Index generally for the reason that their claims and/or S.H.I.E.L.D.'s suspicions to them possessing special abilities turned out to be false. In the cases of Jiaying and Gordon, they were not known to S.H.I.E.L.D. for long enough to be placed on the Index before their deaths.
