"The Fort of San Cristóbal. Held off the Dutch, the English, the Americans."
"But apparently, not the aliens."
Bobbi Morse and Phil Coulson[src]

The Kree City is an ancient city built by the Kree beneath what is now Puerto Rico.

History[]

Origin[]

"My grandmother came from a long line of special people who believed in a story. About the blue angels that fell from the heavens. The ancients called them the Kree."
"And what do the Kree want?"
"Change. That's why they left the Diviner, as a guide to the temple, so the worthy would inherit the Earth."
"And do you know where this temple is?"
"That's what the Diviner shows you. Only the worthy are allowed inside to witness its true power."
Raina and Skye[src]

Over 5,000 years ago, a rogue faction of Kree came to Earth as part of a campaign to create an army of super soldiers to aid their empire in its many wars. They experimented on humans, implanting a latent gene in their subjects that, when activated, began a process known as Terrigenesis, allowing them to access unique superhuman abilities.

The Kree built the city as a center of operations for their experiments, bringing their subjects to a temple complex in the city center where they would undergo the transformation.

Following the Kree's abandonment of their experiments, their subjects, the Inhumans developed their own mythology around the lost city, describing it as a place where the "blue angels" intended the "worthy to inherit the Earth".

The location of the city became lost to time, with the only key being in a series of Kree artifacts known as Diviners which were lethal to unaltered humans but, at the touch of Inhumans, would display a series of symbols with the temple at its center.[1]

Preliminary Investigation[]

"Whatever's in our blood, it was driving us to go to that city, like homing pigeons. Only we couldn't figure out what home was, so it was just driving us mad. Once I had all the pieces... Now we just need to figure out why this alien was so hell bent on getting there."
Phil Coulson to Skye[src]

Phil Coulson was able to discover that the Words of Creation that were implanted in his mind as part of the genetic memory of the Guest Host were actually the blueprints of a city, and therefore, both the extraterrestrial corpse and the Obelisk, that displayed the symbols upon touch, were connected.[2]

Coulson then traveled to Australia with a small team of agents, with the intention of locating the city before HYDRA did it. To locate it, Coulson wanted to hack a satellite network controlled by the United States Air Force from the Kaena Point Air Force Base.

However, given that the base was heavily guarded, Coulson devised a plan to infiltrate Laura Creek Station, a smaller station that activated whenever the main base malfunctioned, and deactivated the base infiltrating two small items that would cause and an Electromagnetic Pulse once General Cole and Commander Darren met at the base.

Once the Electromagnetic Pulse was activated, they would have six minutes to hack the satellite network until Kaena Point went back online. Coulson infiltrated the satellite station with Antoine Triplett and Leo Fitz and they managed to hack the network despite being ambushed by a HYDRA squad led by Calvin Zabo.

City Found

Phil Coulson sees that there is a match for the city.

The satellite network was able to locate an ancient rock formation that matched the 3-D model of the city underneath San Juan in Puerto Rico.[3]

Search for the Kree City[]

Arrival to Puerto Rico[]

"Possible entry points for the city, but most of them are under the ocean floor. Except for one. Here in old San Juan, where we'll enter the underground city."
Skye[src]

Phil Coulson decided to separate his senior S.H.I.E.L.D. agents into two groups, one to protect Raina in Vancouver and the other to accompany him to San Juan and destroy the hidden city underneath. Coulson took a Quinjet with Bobbi Morse, Leo Fitz, Jemma Simmons, and Alphonso Mackenzie to travel to Puerto Rico.

Coulson and Morse went to San Juan while the other agents waited for them in the Quinjet, and she received a message from Diego, her contact in Puerto Rico, who would provide them with architectural plans and would keep the local police department away from them.

Morse and Coulson discussed how to enter the Castillo San Cristóbal, to the only access point to the hidden city that was not under the sea. Morse and Coulson consulted a series of plans that Diego obtained from the city archives, that were older than the city of San Juan itself.

Coulson and Morse went to one of highest points of the fort to compare the map with the satellite spectrometry of the hidden city, and figured out that the vertical shaft that would serve as an access point was located in the deepest part of the fort, just below a garrison in a sentry tower inaccessible to the public.

Coulson ordered Morse to contact Diego again, in order to help them get their equipment to the garrison. Morse asked Coulson about his theory of how HYDRA planned to release the true power inside the Obelisk, given that nobody could even touch the artifact, but Coulson acknowledged that maybe somebody was able to touch it.[1]

La Garita del Diablo[]

"The story is, several of the guards went missing in the middle of the night from this tower, never to be seen again. They simply vanished. It's all preposterous, really."
"Yeah. About as preposterous as an alien city."
Jemma Simmons and Alphonso Mackenzie[src]

Alphonso Mackenzie, Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons descended to the garrison of the Castillo San Cristóbal in order to open an access point to the hidden city; Simmons began commenting about the legend of "La Garita del Diablo" or The Devil's Sentry. Simmons explained that while the whole fort was built in the 18th Century, that tower was built in 1634, and since then it had the fame of being haunted.

Mackenzie used a Mouse Hole to open an entrance to the hidden city, revealing a deep hole to the surface. Mackenzie exclaimed he was not scared of ghosts, but asked Simmons for clarification about the legend. Simmons told that, according to the legend, several of the guards in the sentry tower went missing never to be seen again. Simmons claimed the legend seemed ridiculous, though Mackenzie compared it to an extraterrestrial city.

Phil Coulson and Bobbi Morse arrived at the garrison to check their progress. Fitz and Simmons were unable to decide which of them should answer, making Coulson tell them to start talking, no matter which one of them. Fitz said that they were ready to deploy the D.W.A.R.F.s, and activated three of them to descend through the hole.

Coulson asked about the time it would take to fully survey the tunnel and locate the temple inside the city; Fitz tried to explain that it would depend on several factors, but was unable to find the appropriate words. Mackenzie, who usually helped him in these cases, turned a blind eye to make Fitz request Simmons' help.

Simmons helped Fitz, asking if he wanted to speak about the tectonic stress levels, and then again about the structural integrity of the tunnels. Mackenzie guessed the temple would be distinctive enough to recognize it upon seeing it, but Simmons explained they depended on the data sent by the D.W.A.R.F.s.

Suddenly, the D.W.A.R.F.s got disconnected inside the city, and Fitz determined that since the tablet still worked, the D.W.A.R.F.s were the ones that were disconnected upon arriving.[1]

Sentry of the City[]

"What if the city didn't kill Mack but co-opted him, made him a part of it?"
Jemma Simmons to Leo Fitz[src]

Alphonso Mackenzie prepared to descend towards the city under Castillo San Cristóbal, through a hole of an estimated height of a hundred feet. Mackenzie was not scared of heights, though he could not say the same about the dark.

Phil Coulson handed Mackenzie a handgun, just in case, and asked them to fix the D.W.A.R.F.s, that were previously sent through the hole and went offline. Leo Fitz theorized that all electronics could have been jammed inside the city. Coulson told Mackenzie to make three pulls on the cable if he needed help, and Fitz started to send Mackenzie down the hole.

Mack Symbols

The city activates and possesses Alphonso Mackenzie

Mackenzie reached the bottom of the hole, and though he could not use the radio to contact, he yelled at the hole, obtaining an answer. Mackenzie noticed the D.W.A.R.F.s were on the ground, and touched the symbols at the entrance. This triggered a reaction that slowly transformed Mackenzie into a guardian for the city, starting with displaying the Words of Creation in his hand.

Hearing Mackenzie's screams of pain, Coulson ordered to lift him. Worried, Jemma Simmons explained that the D.W.A.R.F.s did not read any sign of life in the city. Once he was finally lifted, Mackenzie was removed from the harness while he continued to scream and tremble.

Bobbi Morse, extremely worried, tried to make Mackenzie talk to her, while Simmons quickly examined him searching for wounds or signs of blood, to no avail. Coulson approached Mackenzie once he stopped screaming who, with his last remaining strength, told him to run before succumbing to the transformation.

Mackenzie's eyes turned red and he started attacking his friends with superhuman strength. Morse tried to reason with Mackenzie while dodging his blows. Morse retaliated, but her attacks were ineffective, so she dodged Mackenzie again to retrieve her battle staves.

Mackenzie grabbed Morse and began to strangle her. Meanwhile, Fitz threw an I.C.E.R. to Coulson, who promptly shot Mackenzie, but the bullets did not affect him. Morse tried to reason with him, but he was only distracted as Coulson grabbed his own neck.

Staves1

Simmons then attacked him with a suitcase, and Mackenzie's blow almost made her fall through the hole to a certain death. Coulson was able to catch her, while Fitz retrieved a handgun and pointed at him. Fitz tried to reason with him again, as his handgun was real and would kill him. Coulson ordered Fitz to shoot, but Morse used her battle staves to electrocute Mackenzie, seemingly knocking him out.

Mackenzie fell through the hole, and Coulson ordered to seal the tunnel. Morse, in tears, asked what would happen to Mackenzie, but Coulson replied that was not Mackenzie anymore.[1]

Setting the Bombs[]

"All right. Timers are good. We just need to get them to the right spots, insert the detonators, get the hell out."
"What do we do if Mack's down there?"
"If he's dead, we'll bring his body back up. If not, it's not Mack. We'll be doing him a favor."
Antoine Triplett and Jemma Simmons[src]

Antoine Triplett, Jemma Simmons and Leo Fitz traversed the tunnels of the hidden city underneath San Juan in order to place the bombs needed to collapse the city around its temple, and prevent HYDRA from unleashing the true power of the Obelisk.

Simmons commented that despite the tunnels were older than the pyramids, maybe they were the first humans to ever set foot in them, though Triplett was interested in actually being the last ones.

The three agents managed to place two of the four bombs, but Triplett realized that they were going too slow to place the bombs and escape in time. Fitz proposed to split up and go separate ways, but despite Simmons and Triplett's refusal, Fitz assured that it was the right thing to do, as he was familiar with the explosives and had a map of the city, so he would meet them at the garrison of the Castillo San Cristóbal.

Simmons tried to warn Fitz that he was going on a wrong direction, but he mistook her intentions and thought she was trying to dissuade him. Fitz told her she should trust him, but then he realized he was actually going on a wrong direction.

Fitz, Simmons and Triplett managed to place the four explosives in time, and gathered under the garrison to leave the city back to San Juan.[4]

Descent to the City[]

"I put her on this path. I have to try to make it right. If we're not back before the bombs go off, get everybody to the Bus. Just because Whitehall's dead doesn't mean HYDRA's gonna pack up and go home."
"Phil."
"I'm not saying this is a good plan. After all the carving and obsessing and searching, I'm pretty damn curious to see what all the fuss is about."
Phil Coulson and Melinda May[src]

Raina managed to descend of the city as soon as the Plasma Drill cleared a path from the Ponce de León Theater in San Juan, taking the Obelisk with her. She wandered through the tunnels, coming across Alphonso Mackenzie, still possessed by the city.

Raina realized he was an emissary of the city, and asked him to take her to the temple. Upon arriving at its door, Mackenzie did not continue, and Raina entered the chamber alone.

Skye and Phil Coulson descended to the city separately, to pursue Raina and stop her from using the Obelisk, and Antoine Triplett also descended again to remove the detonators from the explosives and save Coulson and Skye from the explosions.

Crazy Mack2

Skye finds the possessed Alphonso Mackenzie near the temple

Skye came across Mackenzie, standing guard at the entrance of the temple, and she was relieved to find him. Mackenzie was unresponsive to her, and she realized something had happened to him given his eyes were fully red. Skye tried to take him out of the city, but seeing that he continued to be immobile, she promised him that she would be back, and entered the temple.[4]

Destiny Fulfilled[]

"Your whole life – our whole lives – have been leading to this moment."
"Sorry, I don't buy into the whole "this is your destiny" thing. We're taking the Obelisk and we're leaving. There are too many lives at stake."
"You got it all wrong. Whitehall, everyone has got it all wrong. This doesn't destroy, it gives life – new life. We finally get to find out what we become."
Raina and Skye[src]

Skye entered the temple of the city, where Raina was waiting for her to activate the Diviner, as she was convinced that Skye would come too. Raina explained that their whole lives have led them to that very moment, but Skye did not believe in having such a "destiny".

Skye told Raina to give her the Diviner and leave with her, as many lives were threatened by it. However, Raina explained that everyone misunderstood the whole purpose of the Diviner, as it was not meant to destroy, but to give new life to ones like them, and they would finally find what they would become.

The Diviner started to glow and floated to the pedestal in the middle of the temple. Skye told Raina to stop it, but she answered that neither of them could stop it. The doors of the temple started to close, and Raina said that it was Skye's chance to leave, admitting she was nervous.

Outside the temple, Phil Coulson was looking for Skye, but he came across Alphonso Mackenzie, still guarding the temple as a servant of the city. Mackenzie hit Coulson, but he was able to fight back and ran past Mackenzie to locate Skye.

Antoine Triplett, who was in the city to deactivate the explosives, entered the temple just before the doors closed. Skye tried to warn him not to enter, but it was too late and he was trapped with Skye and Raina. Coulson arrived just as the doors closed, and was unable to enter.

The Diviner opened on the pedestal, revealing a set of crystals inside. Triplett asked Skye how to stop it, but she thought they could not stop the process that was about to begin. The crystal released a mist that pushed Skye and Raina back, and that activation made Mackenzie, who was outside the temple with Coulson, to be released from the city's control.

Terrigenesis

Skye covered by her cocoon

Skye and Raina began to be covered in a substance that created a thin cocoon around them, but Triplett was not affected by it. Skye's plea for help made Triplett to destroy the crystal with a kick, that released a burst of energy that knocked him to the ground. Despite his efforts, Skye had been completely covered by the substance, and Triplett, who had been hit by a Terrigen Crystal shard as he kicked the crystal, was quickly petrified and killed.

Skye and Raina's cocoons began to shatter, having been transformed. Skye saw her friend petrified like the victims of the Obelisk, and the emotion activated her new powers, releasing a powerful seismic that broke her cocoon and Triplett's petrified body, and caused an earthquake that was felt even in San Juan, more than a hundred feet above her.[4]

Final Assessment[]

"She'll assess the structural integrity of the place and, if possible, blow one of the vertical shafts under the ocean floor, flood the city with water."
"And drown it for good."
Phil Coulson and Skye[src]

Jemma Simmons stayed behind with a S.H.I.E.L.D. team in the Kree City with a city, trying to document everything they could in its tunnels. Simmons led the team in examining the whole city and assessed its structural integrity. Once they finished, she had orders to blow one of the vertical shafts above the city and under the ocean floor to flood the city with water.

Trip's remains

Remains of Antoine Triplett

While she was examining a particular area, one of the members of the team came across Antoine Triplett's remains, including what was left of his face, and Simmons asked him to be especially careful with them. She struggled to continue after seeing the remains of her friend, and proceeded to finish examining the current area.[5]

Underground Assassin[]

"Cavities are carved from lava rock. Therefore, these walls are not load-bearing. Alien stone lining to create electromagnetic flux field... at least, I imagine. I can't measure the bloody thing without electronic equipment. I could spend a year down here answering these questions. Photograph it, mark it off, and let's flood this cursed place."
Jemma Simmons[src]

Jemma Simmons continued to oversee the last sections of the Kree City, where, moments after she had passed, one of the members of her scientific team was attacked and killed by an individual with a body covered in thorns.

Minutes later, Simmons was informed that the last sections had been examined, and she concluded that all the tunnels of the city had been carved from lava rock, so its walls were not load-bearing. She theorized that the extraterrestrial stones found there were creating an electromagnetic flux field, but she could not measure anything without electronic equipment.

Simmons realized she could spend a whole year in the city to answer all her questions, but she decided to photograph everything, mark it, and give the order to flood the city as soon as possible.

Jemma-Simmons-Shoots-Raina

The same individual then attacked and sliced the throats of the two agents that were with Simmons, and, looking at herself at the screen of the hazmat helmet that one of the agents had been wearing, was horrified at what she saw. Simmons, who recognized the individual as Raina, but having suffered a total physical transformation, grabbed a gun and started to shoot at Raina.

Raina was able to withstand the bullets, and ran to flee the Kree City using one of the elevators that S.H.I.E.L.D. had installed to get out of the city.[5]

Destruction[]

"How long 'til you can blow the shaft on the ocean floor?"
"We're preparing the charges now. That place will be underwater and sealed up for good."
Phil Coulson and Jemma Simmons[src]

Jemma Simmons quickly ordered to search for every agent that had been attacked by Raina, finding two agents dead and three in critical condition. She ordered to evacuate the city, returning to San Juan, right above the Kree City, to both inform Phil Coulson at the Playground and to prepare the charges to flood the city.

Once she finished, Simmons gave the order to blow up one of the vertical shafts of the city, making the ocean water enter the city and flood it.[5]

Capabilities[]

Electronics do not work within the Kree City. When the D.W.A.R.F.s were sent inside, they deactivated. S.H.I.E.L.D. agents used torches for light as they set mechanical explosives.

The city also has semi-sentient aspects, being able to influence the minds of others when their skin comes into contact with its walls or floors. Those controlled by the city can also be commanded by Inhumans as demonstrated by Alphonso Mackenzie. People in the thrall of the city become working drones, obtaining enhanced strength, durability, and the ability to absorb energy without being affected by it. These thralls can be freed from the city's influence is a Diviner is activated within the temple.

The city is also capable of super-luminal communication with the Kree Empire, sending out signals whenever a Diviner is used in the temple. Because of this, contemporary Inhumans avoid the city, instead performing their Terrigenesis rituals elsewhere.
