"She knew what I was. She loved me anyway."
Frank Castle[src]

Maria Elizabeth Castle[1] was the wife of Frank Castle.

Biography[]

Meeting Frank Castle[]

"It was at a park on a sunny day, you know? I was there with my guitar. I'm sitting under the tree like a derelict, you know? Trying to learn this this new song. I'm struggling, you know? Struggling away with it. I'm singing out loud like an asshole, you know? And then I see her. She smiled at me. I was done, man. She had me. She says to me, "Hey, buddy, you know anything else? Because we're sick of hearing you butcher this one." That's what she said, you know? I go beet red, you know? And I look up, and I see this gang of her friends. And they're all laughing their asses off."
Frank Castle to Micro[src]

While at the park with her friends, Maria heard Frank Castle trying to play a song on his guitar. However, Frank was so bad that Maria eventually went up to him and asked him to play a different song. A smitten Frank then flirtatiously said to her that he did not do requests. Soon after, the two began a relationship.[2] They often fought, but it strengthened their relationship.[3]

First Pregnancy[]

"I was with Maria for three months when she got pregnant with Lisa. She said that she was not giving her up. Didn't wanna raise her alone, but she understood if I didn't wanna hang around. I asked her to marry me that day. Now I had friends who said I was crazy, that I'd lost my mind. But we were together ever since."

Three months later, Maria got pregnant with their first child, a daughter. While not wanting to give the child up and wanting to raise her with Frank, she told him that she understood if he did not want to be in the child's life. Frank, however, asked her to marry him that same day much to the chagrin of many of his friends. Eventually, the two got married.[2]

Second Pregnancy[]

"Yeah, we did 15-month rotations in Afghanistan. You leave, you got a pregnant wife. You come back, the kid, he's... he's walking, you know. He sees you for the first time, starts to scream. He's got no idea who you are."

Maria got pregnant with Frank's second child, a son. However, she was not able to inform him until he returned from his tour in Afghanistan.[2]

"Your father has no sense of the romantic. Just ask your mother."
Billy Russo to Frank Castle, Jr.[src]

After Frank returned home, he took Maria and the children to Central Park with Billy Russo to have a picnic. While Lisa was riding the carousel horse, Maria remarked that the kids were growing up fast and were getting too old to go to the park. Russo called the two over with Frank Jr. to get the food, with Maria and Frank stating that Frank Jr. and Billy were two peas in a pod.

Russo told the family that he was named after Billy the Kid who was an orphan and survived with his wits and bravery. Lisa asked him how he knew that he was named after Billy the Kid if he was an orphan, causing Maria and Frank to chuckle with the family. Russo replied that Lisa was too smart to be Frank's daughter and he didn't know the answer. Maria told Billy that they were all the family he needed.[4]

Unbeknownst to the family, William Rawlins decided to have Frank and his family killed by having three gangs (the Kitchen Irish, the Mexican Cartel, and the Dogs of Hell) meet in a shootout to look like it was the cause of their death. Maria and her children were killed, alongside an innocent undercover cop. However, Frank survived the gunshot wound to the head.[5]

Legacy[]

Frank Castle's War[]

Following the Massacre at Central Park, Frank Castle was stricken with grief. Out of rage, he decided to track down every single person involved with his family's death, earning him the mantle of the Punisher. He shot up the Kitchen Irish which became a famous shooting in Hell's Kitchen. This prompted Daredevil to try and stop him. Castle had no quarrels with Daredevil and only shot him as a warning shot.[6] When Daredevil got in his way again for trying to kill Elliot Grote, Castle kidnapped him.[7] Punisher tried to shoot the Dogs of Hell in front of the tied up Daredevil as well as finishing of Grote, which he was successful in. Daredevil knocked out Castle while he fought the incoming Dogs of Hell.[8]

Castle woke up and managed to escape. He then was sought out by Finn Cooley, who wanted revenge for Castle's killing of his son. He managed to kill Cooley, who told him there was no more information on the death of his family. Castle was then captured by Daredevil. Castle talked about his grief over losing his family and how he thought he was done with his revenge now that there is now other leads.[9]

Castle went to court where he was represented by Nelson and Murdock.[10] He was told by an officer that there was someone in jail who has information. Castle decided to tank his case in order to obtain this information.[11] When he got to Ryker's Island, the man, Wilson Fisk, told him that the leading prisoner, Dutton was involved in the massacre. If Castle killed Dutton, then Fisk will let him go because it led to Fisk being the Kingpin of the prison. Castle agreed and found Dutton, who told him that they were supposed to meet the Blacksmith that night to sell heroin. However, the Blacksmith didn't show which led to a shootout. Castle killed Dutton, but was crossed by Fisk who set him up to die. Castle killed every last inmate who attacked him. Fisk then decided to honor their agreement and let Castle roam free.[12]

Castle then went after the Blacksmith and found his ship. He blew up the ship and was believed to be dead. He soon found out that the Blacksmith wasn't on the ship.[3] He tracked down Blacksmith to his house. The Blacksmith turned out to be Castle's old Colonel, Ray Schoonover. Castle killed Schoonover and raided his weapons shed. [13] Castle returned to his house and blew it up.[14]

Castle spent the next year going and killing the rest of the people involved including Cartel Sicario and Mickey O'Hare. Soon after completing his mission, he burned his Punisher armor vest, signifying the end of his revenge.[15]

Giving Suggestions[]

Frank Castle asked Karen Page if she loved Matt Murdock. She told him that he is the type of person that she should get away from. Castle told her that fights are better for the relationship. The way he makes Page feel is the feeling Castle wish he could have one last time.[3]
