"Years ago, a village in the Hunan Province in China. It was destroyed. Every man, woman, and child torn apart by monsters trying to find that baby."
Raina to Grant Ward[src]

The Massacre in Hunan was a mass assassination at Hunan village orchestrated by Jiaying and Calvin Zabo.

Background[]

"We were headed into the Hunan Province of China. A senior agent had called in an 0-8-4."
Richard Lumley[src]

In 1989, a group of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, who were secretly HYDRA operatives, raided the village in Hunan and abducted several of the elders, including Jiaying. They brought Jiaying and the elders to Austria, where Jiaying was horrified to find herself reunited with Daniel Whitehall who was released from prison. When Whitehall saw that Jiaying was alive and physically unaged, he vivisected the woman and used her blood and organs to regain some of his youth. Then Whitehall had Jiaying's body disposed of in the wilderness.[5]

Calvin Zabo, her husband, left their daughter Daisy Johnson among people he trusted, and set off to search for his wife. He later found her body remains in Austria. Using his medical skills, Zabo stitched her body back together until her Inhuman powers allowed her to recover and return to life.[3]

HYDRA was soon made aware of Daisy Johnson's existence and arranged for an official S.H.I.E.L.D. investigation into an 0-8-4, or an object of unknown origin, within the Hunan Province.[6][7]

Massacre[]

"You did wipe out an entire village."
"They were trying to hide her from me!"
"It was Jiaying's idea to destroy that village, wasn't it?"
Phil Coulson and Calvin Zabo[src]

Calvin Zabo had killed many of the HYDRA operatives that went to the village,[5] and S.H.I.E.L.D. tasked one of its teams, that included rookie agents Linda Avery and Richard Lumley, to investigate an 0-8-4 in Hunan, assuming the entire village died trying to protect the object. As Avery and Lumley lost communication with the first team sent, they investigated the area and found their senior agent under a bridge with a fatal wound, having managed to escape with the 0-8-4 but ultimately dying while doing so. They discovered that the 0-8-4 was a baby girl, who had fallen asleep in the dead agent's arms, and the five surviving agents took the baby and returned to the United States of America.[7]

Aftermath[]

"We realized the only way to keep our people and the kid from being hunted–"
"Was to erase her from existence."
"Avery was smart. She used a lead agent's credentials to fake a Level 8 clearance. She set up a nearly invisible protocol. The foster system was ordered to move the child around every few months."
Richard Lumley and Phil Coulson[src]

When the secondary S.H.I.E.L.D. team returned home, the agents began to be killed one by one, leaving Linda Avery and Richard Lumley as the last two survivors. Wishing to protect Daisy Johnson, Avery impersonated the lead agent, using her credentials to use a Level 8 Clearance Level to set up an invisible protocol, one where the foster was ordered system moved the child every few months. Avery then dropped the baby off at Saint Agnes Orphanage before she was hunted down and murdered, although she died keeping the secret of her actions. Lumley, who was aware of Avery's actions, fled the country when he learned of her murder. Lumley eventually relocated to Mexico City, Mexico.[7]

Years later, Johnson she became a brilliant hacker, deleted all official records on her "Mary Sue Poots" identity and gave herself the name Skye.[8] During her life, Skye was a member of Rising Tide, became an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.[2], met her parents and learned the truth about her real identity.[9]
