History[]
World War II[]
- "The soldiers that came into my camp in Okinawa… The ones I killed. They were coming to surrender. I just didn't realize it until it was too late. I buried the flag before anyone else saw it."
- ―Jack Thompson to Peggy Carter[src]
During the World War II, Okinawa was invaded by the United States Armed Forces, with the intention to use it as a major air force and troop base for the planned invasion of Japan.[1] One night, six Japanese soldiers decided to surrender and approached the U.S. military camp with the white flag, however, they were killed by Jack Thompson, who was not aware of their intentions. When he realized, Thompson buried the white flag and made up a story that he bravely killed the soldiers before they could kill the commanding officer, earning a Navy Cross medal.[2]
Interrogation of Toshiro Mori[]
Bobbi Morse, Lance Hunter, and Melinda May were sent by Phil Coulson on a S.H.I.E.L.D. mission in Okinawa to investigate the weapon used by HYDRA that was supposedly developed by Toshiro Mori. Using her background as an undercover HYDRA operative, Morse infiltrated Mori's estate and talked with him about the weaponry. Mori revealed that his Splinter Bombs were based on an old HYDRA technology that was developed during the World War II. He also mentioned that all the bombs he developed were shipped to Daniel Whitehall, as Mori was hoping for a chance to work on the Diviner.
However, Morse was unaware that Mori and his men received a directive that Morse was actually a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and was ordered to be eliminated. While Mori talked with Morse and mentioned that HYDRA was after Julien Beckers, Mori's bodyguard approached Morse with an intention to kill her, but she was rescued by Hunter who received a directive. In a subsequent gunfight, Morse and Hunter killed Mori and his men, although Morse was frustrated that Hunter meddled with her plans to get Mori to talk. May interrupted them and reminded them about HYDRA's plans on Beckers, as his death would maintain Christian Ward's anti-S.H.I.E.L.D. rhetoric.[3]
