The Cellist[]

Audrey Nathan, girlfriend of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson, moved to Portland, gaining a seat as a second chair cellist of the Portland Symphony Orchestra. Coulson revealed this to Pepper Potts as she asked about their relationship, and later, Tony Stark even offered to fly Coulson there for a weekend so he could spend time with Nathan.[1]

Starting Over[]

Phil Coulson recommended Elliot Randolph move to the American Northwest when he decided that with the new fascination with Asgardians in Europe, he needed to start over with his life in another place.

Coulson specifically recommended him Portland, praising the food, and the Portland Symphony Orchestra. Randolph asked him to visit, as there were few people with whom he could share his stories, and Coulson offered him the chance to introduce him to Thor.[2]

Unseen Protector[]

Phil Coulson still watched Audrey Nathan in Portland following his resurrection, and though he could not reveal his survival to keep S.H.I.E.L.D. protocol, he still knew where she was and what was happening to her.[3]

Blackouts[]

First Contact[]

Portland 1

Portland

Marcus Daniels was freed from the Fridge when HYDRA operatives led by John Garrett raided the facility, and managed to obtain a vehicle to travel to Portland, as the woman with whom he was obsessed, Audrey Nathan, had moved there years before.

Phil Coulson led Jemma Simmons, Leo Fitz, and Antoine Triplett to Portland in pursuit, knowing that he would continue to pursue Nathan after all of his years of imprisonment.

Nathan left her house to practice jogging in a park at night, and Daniels, who managed to track her, began following her, unnoticed until his presence disturbed the player Nathan was using to listen to music. Scared, Nathan turned around knowing what that could mean, and was horrified to see Daniels, running to escape from him.

Nathan came across a car driven by Triplett, and Simmons opened the door, telling her they were CIA agents and were aware of Daniels' presence. Simmons prompted Nathan to get in the car, escaping from the area. Another car with Coulson and Fitz appeared, and Fitz sent the D.W.A.R.F.s in order to overload Daniels with light, trying to stop him. Coulson tried to reason with him, saying that they needed to take him into custody for his safety and the safety of others.

Darkforce 2

Blackout emitting Darkforce energy

Daniels recognized Coulson as the agent that imprisoned him in the Fridge, and though Fitz raised the power of the lights pointing at Daniels, he was able to resist, angrily saying that he was experimented on there, with Coulson being sure it was to contain him, but Daniels said it was to make him stronger; something they managed to accomplish.

Daniels shot two blasts of Darkforce energy that knocked Coulson and Fitz down, allowing Daniels to escape before they could even get up.[4]

Past Revealed[]

Portland 2

Audrey Nathan took refuge in a building still under construction

Audrey Nathan refuged herself in a building with Jemma Simmons and Antoine Triplett, worried about Marcus Daniels and his sudden appearance, because she thought Daniels was imprisoned.

Simmons and Triplett assured her that they were there to protect her, and Nathan, getting past their lie of being CIA agents, recognized them as S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, knowing that they were not the criminals the news said, as the agency saved her life before.

Nathan explained how Daniels become obsessed with her, first seeing him at one of her concerts, and then at all of them. Though at first she was flattered for having a devoted fan, she was terrified when she saw Daniels outside of her house, and begged him to leave her alone. Daniels, who considered Nathan the only light in his darkness, started blacking out her entire block, and she ran to call the police, who did not believe her.

She continued the story, saying how S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson appeared and promised her to stop Daniels. Nathan trusted him from the beginning, and he fulfilled his promise, never lying to her, and making her know that she could trust S.H.I.E.L.D.

Nathan revealed the identity of the agent as Phil Coulson, surprising both Simmons and Triplett, and also Leo Fitz, who had been listening to the whole conversation with Coulson in another room and asked him if he and Nathan were together. None revealed they knew Coulson or that he was there too, and they inquired about what happened to him.

Nathan still believed that Coulson died in the line of duty, though she did not know the details, as she got a call that left her devastated, with everything reminding her of Coulson for a long time after his death. She even still had dreams about him, waking up believing he was watching over her.

Fitz told Coulson that maybe he should reveal his survival and his presence, but Coulson dismissed it, saying that Nathan was healing and moving on with her life, and what they should do was help her by stopping Daniels. Fitz devised a method to stop Daniels, but his suggestion to use Nathan as bait was met with a strong refusal by Coulson.

Fitz said there was no other option, and though Coulson did not want to put her in danger, she already was, as Daniels was dangerous and obsessed with Nathan, so he would not stop until he got what he wanted.[4]

Rehearsal[]

Ld9

Audrey Nathan and Jemma Simmons

Audrey Nathan was convinced by Jemma Simmons and Antoine Triplett to lure Marcus Daniels and stop him for good, saying that she did not need to worry, as they would be there to protect her, and the only thing she needed to do was continue playing until Daniels got close to the stage.

Nathan was not sure, as last time two whole teams of S.H.I.E.L.D. were needed to stop Daniels, and Simmons comforted her saying that their best agents were watching above the stage, pointing to the place where Phil Coulson and Leo Fitz were, promising that they would not let anything happen to her.

Fitz explained the method he devised, using the Gamma Power Reserves from the S.H.I.E.L.D. Jump Jet to modify the frequency and wavelength of the stage lights, even transforming them from lights into gamma rays. Coulson simply asked if it would work, as last time he took Daniels into custody to rehabilitate him, but it turned out they improved his powers.

Fitz acknowledged that there was a minor chance that Daniels could absorb the energy and gain more power, but recognized it was unlikely. Coulson asked who was the creator of that technology, and when Fitz answered it was Bruce Banner, Coulson sarcastically said all would go as planned.

Coulson prompted Fitz to take his position, as Daniels would arrive soon, while Simmons and Triplett finished preparing the stage for the ambush. Fitz asked Coulson why he did not want to reveal his survival, because, by the way Nathan talked about him, it seemed they had a beautiful relationship. Coulson did not want to hurt her again, as he could not stay with her, prompting him to finish their job.

Nathan began playing on the stage, with all agents taking positions to attack Daniels, who finally arrived moments later. Nathan stopped playing once she noticed he was there; Daniels asked her to continue playing, apologizing for scaring her and saying she was the only one who could save him from being a monster. Nathan continued playing to lure him to the stage, while Coulson began to activate the stage lights.

Darkforce 3

S.H.I.E.L.D. defeats Blackout

Fitz, Simmons and Triplett attacked Daniels with the modified lights, but he retaliated by shooting blasts of Darkforce at them. Seeing that Nathan was in danger, Coulson hurried to the stage, while she begged Daniels to leave her. Coulson attacked Daniels with another stage light, beginning to hurt him, and Triplett joined the attack before Daniels could shoot again, overloading him and making him explode.

The explosion knocked Nathan down, and Coulson hurried to her side while she was unconscious, telling her that she was safe and that he was still there protecting her. Nathan began to regain consciousness as Coulson kissed her forehead, and Nathan even dropped a tear, believing she was dreaming about Coulson. She opened her eyes calling for Coulson, but she only found Simmons, Triplett and Fitz with her, having defeated Daniels for good.[4]
