"A separatist group from South Ossetia has built a weapon called ezbiitomet."
"The Overkill Device?"
"A little dramatic for my taste. I imagine something was lost in translation."
Victoria Hand and Grant Ward[src]

The Ezbiitomet, or Overkill Device, was a weapon built by South Ossetian separatists that utilized sonic vibrations and was capable of activating or destroying any weapon before it could be used, ranging from a gun in its holster, to a missile on a plane, or a nuclear missile in its silo.

History[]

"They plan to use the weapon in the next twenty-four hours to declare their independence from Russia and Georgia."
Victoria Hand[src]

S.H.I.E.L.D. first learned of the existence of the Overkill Device when Agent Phil Coulson's team extracted Shaw from his undercover assignment in Siberia. With the intelligence provided by Shaw, S.H.I.E.L.D. learned that the South Ossetian separatists were planning on utilizing the Overkill Device in an attempt to declare their independence from Russia and Georgia. S.H.I.E.L.D. planned an assault on the separatists but needed a two-man team to infiltrate and deactivate the Overkill Device, lest it would be used against the assault teams.

To this end, Victoria Hand sent in Grant Ward and Leo Fitz to neutralize the weapon. Ward and Fitz were successful in their efforts to deactivate the weapon, allowing a S.H.I.E.L.D. strike force to successfully neutralize the separatists. Fitz modified the core and connected it to a portable energy source, and used it against separatists in their escape.[1]

Hand then had all the information sealed on her orders.[2] Similar looking devices, probably based on the original, were later used to neutralize weapons on the Bus by Hand's agents, when S.H.I.E.L.D. was being taken over by HYDRA.[3]

Following Coulson's restructure of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fitz, despite his brain damage, was able to modify it to incapacitate Carl Creel by overloading his absorbing powers. Coulson used the device on Creel, who was forced into a petrified state when it disrupted his powers.[4]

Capabilities[]

"We believe it creates sonic vibrations powerful enough to trigger weapons from a great distance. Anything from the missiles on a helicopter to a nuclear warhead sitting in its silo."

OverkillDevice-Carl-Creel

Phil Coulson uses the Overkill Device to incapacitate Carl Creel

The Overkill Device is designed to emit intense sonic vibrations that are capable of remotely discharging or destroying most conventional, combustion-based guns as well as a wide range of explosive weapons. The device is mainly composed of a main component, a small cylindrical device circled by arcing pipes, which generates the sonic vibrations. Originally, the main component was augmented by a system of large, winding pipes that could intensify and transmit the sonic vibrations over a large distance and allow it to affect larger targets. The main component itself can be combined with an independent power source and used as a handheld weapon.

Later, the Overkill Device was modified specifically to overload Carl Creel's power to absorb and replicate inanimate material. A number of small spikes were added to the end and the device was stabbed into Creel's back, after which it discharged sonic pulses through his body that disrupted his abilities.

Trivia[]

  • In the comics, the Overkill Horn was a weapon designed during the Cold War to detonate nuclear devices. Both S.H.I.E.L.D. and HYDRA created a prototype version of this weapon.
