The Rescue of Wanda Maximoff was a successful attempt by Clint Barton to infiltrate the New Avengers Facility and retrieve former teammate Wanda Maximoff.

After an attack in Lagos killed twenty-six people, eleven being relief aid workers from Wakanda, the governments of the world called for the United Nations to create a system of accountability.[2]

The United Nations eventually passed the Sokovia Accords, a set of documents that would establish a panel to monitor and control the movements of the Avengers.

Following the announcement, Tony Stark placed Wanda Maximoff under house arrest and tasked Vision with keeping her confined to the New Avengers Facility in order to prevent another incident from taking place.

However, Steve Rogers contacted the now-retired Clint Barton to rescue Maximoff and help him deal with the threat of the Winter Soldiers.[2]

Vision and Maximoff were asleep when an explosion suddenly went off outside the compound. Vision told Maximoff to stay inside before heading off to investigate.

Maximoff did as she was told only to realize someone else was in the compound. She used her powers on a nearby kitchen knife to attack the intruder, only to realize that Hawkeye was in the room and that he was responsible for the explosion, which was meant to distract Vision while he rescued her.

Before the two could escape, they were confronted by Vision, who had realized the truth and had returned to foil the attempt.[2]

Vision warned Hawkeye to consider the consequences of his actions only to be stopped when two trick arrows released an electric shock that paralyzed him. Barton then realized Maximoff was not following him towards the exit and learned that she was afraid of the damage she had caused.

As Barton tried motivating her into leaving, Vision broke free from the trap and subdued his former ally. Maximoff tried to convince Vision to let Barton go. When he refused, Maximoff used her powers to control the Mind Stone and forced Vision to release Barton before increasing his density and blasting him meters beneath the facility.[2]

Scott Lang meeting Steve Rogers

After escaped the facility, Barton and Maximoff recruited former petty criminal Scott Lang, who had been personally recommended by Sam Wilson, to their cause.

The three then made their way to Flughafen Leipzig-Halle Airport in Germany, where Rogers, Wilson and Bucky Barnes were waiting to take a Quinjet to the HYDRA facility where the Winter Soldiers were being kept in cryogenic stasis.[2]

  1. As Rogers watches TV, the Attack on the IFID Headquarters is stated to be "last month". The Spider-Man: Homecoming Prelude also states that the Bombing of the Vienna International Centre is "one month later", after Lagos. WHiH gave the timeline date for the Lagos incident as May 3, 2016, putting the rest of the events of Captain America: Civil War in June. However, in Spider-Man: Homecoming, it jumps forward to "two months later," to the firm date of September 8, 2016. Assuming the 2 is rounded, this still works with June so long as it is very late June. It has to be as late as possible in June, but before schools broke up in New York on June 28th (1, 2), as Parker gets home from school and still has homework to do. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Stark says that he took Parker for the "weekend," therefore making the date he picks up Parker Friday 24th June, and when he returns him the very early hours of Monday 27th June. These are the only dates which fit ras being a weekend, before schools break up, a rounded 2 months before September 8th, and still the month following the May 3, 2016 Lagos incident, as well as a loose (May to June) "one month" after the incident, thus placing Captain America: Civil War firmly around these dates. The Rescue of Wanda Maximoff is the same day Parker meets Stark, the 24th.
