"I mean, just out back, there's an orphanage full of kids who've lost everything and everyone. Some of them are disabled, much worse off than you ever were. And they're still trying to make the most out of life, the little cowards."
Maggie Grace to Matt Murdock[src]

The Saint Agnes Orphanage is an orphanage in New York City where both Daisy Johnson and Matt Murdock took up residence in during their respective childhoods.

History[]

Daisy Johnson's Childhood[]

"The agent who dropped you at Saint Agnes was not your mother. But she was killed trying to protect you."
Phil Coulson to Skye[src]

Daisy Johnson was discovered by a S.H.I.E.L.D. team in Hunan, China, and was herself an 0-8-4. The entire village and nearly the whole S.H.I.E.L.D. team was killed protecting her. Back in the United States, the remaining members started being systematically eliminated. Fearing for the child's safety, one of the surviving agents, Linda Avery, dropped her off at the orphanage.

S.H.I.E.L.D. had an arrangement with the orphanage to keep her safe by transferring her to different foster homes after certain periods of time. One foster home she liked belonged to the Brody's, but, as per the arrangement, she was not allowed to stay.[1]

The people at the orphanage gave her the name Mary Sue Poots, though she later gave herself the name Skye.[2] Skye's stay at the orphanage affected her views on God, not agreeing on how the nuns used "God's wrath" to teach kids how to behave.[3]

Matt Murdock's Youth[]

Overwhelming Gifts[]

"He came to us right after he lost his father. His only family. He was alone in the world. In his private darkness. Surrounded by strangers. Yet he seemed fine during the day. He'd eat with the others, attend his classes, go to mass. But he was plagued by awful nightmares."
Maggie Grace to Karen Page[src]

Matt Murdock was also placed in the Saint Agnes Orphanage after the death of his father, Jack Murdock. While living there, his heightened senses developed so much they frequently overwhelmed him, especially all the things he heard.

One day, a man named Stick arrived at the orphanage, as one of the nuns was able to locate him, having heard about his work with special children. The nun explained that Murdock's problems were less severe at first, but they were becoming worse and causing him pain.

Both doctors and clergy had no idea of what happened to Murdock, and Stick explained he could help him, but not for free. The nun assured Stick that his father left a large inheritance, and Stick asked about Murdock's mother. The nun only said that she was not dead, but it was another story.

Stick and the nun arrived at Murdock's bedroom, and he got rid of the nun asking her to cash his check. Stick then spoke to Murdock, saying that while everyone else believed the boy was getting worse, he was actually getting stronger. To demonstrate it, Stick threw his keys to Murdock, who easily caught them, and then told him to start with his training.[4]
