Officer Saunders was a New York City Police Department officer who fought and died in the Battle of New York, helping civilians evacuate under the orders of Captain America.

Battle of New York[]

Saunders and Silva meet Captain America
When an portal opened up in the sky of New York City and aliens began to invade, the New York City Police Department were dispatched to respond to the situation. During the Battle of New York, Saunders called for assistance and was told that it would be an hour before the National Guard could be sent to the city.
Saunders then ran to Silva, informing him of what he had been told, and he questioned whether the United States Army knew what was actually going on. Saunders responded if they even knew what was happening as Captain America landed in front of them. As the two officers were confused on the costumed heroes' presence, he informed them of where civilians at risk were, and how to get them to safety, as well as to create a perimeter for him.
Silva was reluctant to take orders from Captain America, but when they witnessed him fight a multiple Chitauri soldiers, they complied.[1] Captain America then tossed Saunders a Chitauri Gun he acquired from a soldier, telling him to use it in the battle. Saunders proceeded to make his way through the battlefield with the alien weapon, using it upon the Chitauri, impressed by how powerful it was. Saunders then notified the rest of the department to use the alien guns if they came across them.
While helping in the evacuation of the streets, Saunders then spotted a civilian in the middle of the battlefield, so he called out to her to get her to safety. However, while trying to help her, Saunders was shot by the Chitauri, killing him.[2]

- Enver Gjokaj was credited as "Young Cop" in The Avengers.
Behind the Scenes[]
- Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. co-creator Jed Whedon revealed in an interview with The A.V. Club that there were talks to retcon Saunders into a time-traveling Daniel Sousa, the character played by Enver Gjokaj in the show, during the seventh season, but the idea was dropped due conflicts with the established timeline.[3]
