"Spanish is a language, not a nationality."
"You've never heard of... Spain?"
Porcupine and Águila[src]

Spain, officially the Kingdom of Spain, is a transcontinental country located in Europe and Africa.

History[]

Asgardian Warrior[]

"We found promising locations with Viking relics, El Divino Niño. A church built on the ruins of an 8th century crypt built on Roman ruins from 206 B.C."
Melinda May[src]

A single warrior from the Asgardian Berserker Army decided to stay behind on Earth when the rest of the army returned to Asgard.

The warrior broke the weapon that gave the Berserkers their power, the so-called Berserker Staff, and traveled to Seville following Viking raid routes to hide one of the pieces in the catacombs under one of the churches that were raided, El Divino Niño.[1]

Religious Art[]

"It dates back to Spain, in early 1500s. It was the only item in our entire church that was spared."
Bishop[src]

In the early 16th Century, a painting portraying the Virgin and Child was finished in Spain, as one of the many pieces of religious art that were created in that age. Over time, the painting would be transported to the church of Santa Maria de las Flores in Miami.[2]

World War II[]

Spanish Civil War[]

HYDRA's armored vehicle in action at Guernica

When the Spanish Civil War started in 1936, the leaders of Nazi Germany decided to support the Nationalists led by Generalísimo Francisco Franco. HYDRA was among the German units sent by Adolf Hitler to assist the Nationalists on the battlefield.[3]

Destruction of Guernica[]

In April 1937, HYDRA's armored vehicles and soldiers equipped with powerful exo-skeleton battle suits destroyed the city of Guernica. At the time, it was believed the German air force, the Luftwaffe, was responsible for the destruction of the city.[3]

Early Mission[]

During one of their very first missions as S.H.I.E.L.D. field agents, Phil Coulson allowed Melinda May to drive his car L.O.L.A., making her vow to never tell anybody about it. Years later, a Life-Model Decoy of the real Agent May told this to Daisy Johnson, recollecting that the event may have happened in Madrid.[4]

One of Many Houses[]

In the hypothetical situation Elektra outlined for Matt Murdock the two of them would get married and buy multiple houses. One of these houses would be in San Sebastián, Spain.[5]

Berserker Staff[]

"Randolph said to check Viking routes, find any others?"
"There's some sites along the Volga river in Russia, some in Kiev, and weirdly, here."
"In Seville, Spain?"
"It's a long shot, but Vikings sacked Seville twice."
Grant Ward, Skye and Phil Coulson[src]

Elliot Randolph, a professor at the university of Seville and one of the world's leading experts in Norse mythology, lectured one of his students, Elena, that she must adapt to what recent events had demonstrated to intertwine history and mythology.

Randolph received a visit from S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson, who consulted him when Thor's hammer Mjølnir appeared in New Mexico, accompanied by Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons. Randolph greeted Coulson, who immediately let his collector vein take over, and recognized Randolph's pen, describing it with detail, and lamenting that his government salary would not let him acquire such an expensive object.

Randolph assumed that Coulson's visit had to do something with an artifact found in London following the Battle of Greenwich, but Coulson revealed that it was an artifact retrieved inside a tree in Norway, and that they were not the ones who obtained it.

Coulson showed him a 3-D model of the artifact, and Randolph instantly recognized it as a piece of the Berserker Staff, and consulted one of his books to recount the story of the Berserker Army, and how they fought with the strength of twenty warriors thanks to the properties of the staff, that he qualified as magic properties, something that Simmons could not help to correct as a yet-undiscovered scientific attribute. In the story one of the warriors stayed behind as he was in love with life on Earth, and hid his staff, breaking it into three pieces, and giving clues to their locations with three different verses. Randolph advised Coulson to search locations that followed Viking raid routes, but misleading him into centering his search in Canada.

Coulson informed S.H.I.E.L.D. of the discovery, and another team was dedicated to the search, but as they found no trace of Asgardian artifacts in the area, Skye and Melinda May were tasked to find other locations that could match the description, finding that one of them was precisely Seville, and the church of El Divino Niño was built on the ruins of an 8th Century crypt, that was built over Roman ruins from 206 B.C..

Grant Ward and Skye investigated the ruins of the crypt under El Divino Niño, while Coulson and Fitz acted as backup on the streets, discussing the Spanish tradition of a nap time in the afternoon. Coulson checked Ward and Skye's status, who revealed they did not find anything yet, but Fitz informed them that he was receiving readings from something moving near Ward.

Ward came across Randolph, who had obtained the piece of the Berserker Staff, but Ward touched the piece and was overcome with rage and painful memories, losing consciousness. Skye found Ward, who revealed that Randolph was able to escape with the staff.

Jakob Nystrom, Petra Larsen and the rest of their Norse Paganist Hate Group came across Randolph in the streets, and watched how he was trying to escape with the second piece of the Staff. They attacked him before he could escape, and launched his car over the air, taking the piece and leaving Seville. Coulson ran to the location, and found an unharmed but repent Randolph, who confessed he screwed up before being taken into custody.

Ward began to show behavioral changes and an increase of his strength as a result of his contact with the Berserker Staff, a situation that Coulson used to successfully interrogate Randolph, discovering that he was the Asgardian Warrior from the legend, and managing to convince him to reveal the location of the third piece of the staff in Ireland.[1]

Purpose in the Machine 20

Strucker enjoys his privileged lifestyle

"Mr. Braun needs to see the world for what it really is."
Grant Ward[src]

The son of HYDRA's leader Baron Strucker, Werner von Strucker was raised away from his father's work. Instead of entering the world of terrorism von Strucker lived a life of luxury in Ibiza, going by the name Alexander Braun. He used his father's money to purchase large boats and host parties with beautiful women.

While hosting one of these parties, Grant Ward, who had learned of Braun his real identity and had traveled to Ibiza, appeared and began attacking von Strucker's security team. Despite their best efforts, the guards could not defeat the highly trained HYDRA agent and Ward eventually captured von Strucker and left Ibiza with him.[6]

Hiding from the Hand[]

Worried that their upcoming fight with the Hand would not be the end, but just the beginning of a bigger conflict, Elektra and Matt Murdock talked about leaving New York City and hiding under a different identity. One of the possible locations suggested by Murdock was Madrid, Spain.[7]

Steel Serpent's Sales[]

Palma de Mallorca and Lleida were the hometowns of some of the Hand's clients that bought their Steel Serpent using the resources of Rand Enterprises.[8]

Agnes Kitsworth Persecution[]

The former lover of the scientist Holden Radcliffe named Agnes Kitsworth took refuge in a Spanish town known as Caldes de Montbui, to separate from her old life with Radcliffe after having used her as a design for the future body of his synthetic assistant whom he named AIDA. Later, the intelligence agency S.H.I.E.L.D. tracked down Kitsworth's location to find out more about her former lover after he allowed herself to be corrupted by the Darkhold's cursed book. After a lengthy conversation with the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Agnes met up with Holden again to provide him with an offer he couldn't resist, having Radcliffe drive Agnes and the Darkhold on his way to his twisted experiments.[9]

Framework Network[]

With the knowledge of the Darkhold, Holden Radcliffe and Aida began perfecting the Framework. Upon completion, the code had become so powerful that it had to be processed on devices from all around the world. Part of the data was transmitted to six processors in Madrid, Spain.[10]

Vanessa Marianna's Safety[]

"Felix hid her in Spain?"
"It was her decision. We strongly advised against Europe, given the extradition risk, but Ms. Marianna enjoys the art and she can be very insistent."
Wilson Fisk and Benjamin Donovan[src]

While Wilson Fisk was imprisoned and placed in the Presidential Hotel, he ordered Felix Manning to make sure that Vanessa Marianna is safe outside of New York City. Manning claimed that Europe is too dangerous for her but Marianna convinced him to take her to Spain. Manning agreed and placed her in a safe house outside of Barcelona.[11]
