Star-Lord's Helmet is an expanding partial helmet worn by Peter Quill.
History[]
By 2014, Peter Quill acquired the helmet and had it affixed behind his right ear. When he visited the planet Morag to obtain the Orb, he activated the helmet to escape from Korath. The helmet was taken from Quill when he was imprisoned by the Nova Corps on the Kyln. During his escape, he retrieved it along with his other belongings. After retrieving his Walkman, he used the helmet to protect himself from the vacuum of space while soaring towards the Milano.
When Gamora's pod was destroyed during the Skirmish on Knowhere, Quill put the helmet on Gamora to protect her from the vacuum of space until they were rescued by the Ravagers. During the Battle of Xandar, Quill used the helmet during his fight with the Sakaarans.[1]
Later that year, during the Battle on Sovereign, Quill used the helmet as protection while he attacked an Abilisk. Quill again used the helmet to confront Ego, with him using it to scan the ever-shifting terrain. The helmet was destroyed when Ego threw Quill backwards, cracking and breaking it in two in the midst of the battle.[2]
By 2018, Quill had acquired a new helmet[3] and used it in the battle against the Avengers and Thanos. However, when Thanos assembled the complete Infinity Gauntlet and wiped out half the universe, it was disintegrated along with Quill.[4] The helmet was restored alongside Quill in the Blip. It was worn by Quill during the Battle of Earth.[5]
When the Guardians of the Galaxy purchased Knowhere and transformed into their official headquarters,[6] Quill kept his helmet in his desk drawer in his room and thus did not bring it with him[7] during his quest to save Rocket Raccoon.[8]
Alternate Universe Versions[]

Used by T'Challa[]
In an alternate universe, T'Challa was the one abducted from Earth instead of Quill, becoming that universe's Star-Lord as a result. Along with that, T'Challa was given the helmet, which he used when taking the Orb from Morag and recruiting Korath to the Ravagers.[9]
Capabilities[]
This helmet utilizes a wide array of capabilities. Peter Quill's expanding helmet is activated by an earpiece behind his right ear. It offers a suite of life-support functions that allow him to breath in alien atmosphere, provides ballistic protection and boasts a heads-up display synced into his scanners, weapons and flight systems.[10] The ones that were exhibited by Star-Lord include:
- Size-Altering: The helmet can be shrunk down into an earpiece that is on the back of the user's right ear, materializing into pixelated blue light.
- Air Purification: The helmet protects the wearer from toxic atmosphere.
- Backup Oxygen Supply: The helmet provides oxygen for the wearer in the vacuum of space.
- Pressure Support: The helmet protects the wearer's face from sudden changes in air pressure.
- Heads-Up Display: The helmet's HUD threat detection system improves wearer's reflex time. It also allows for thermal and ultraviolet vision.[10]
Behind the Scenes[]
- The destruction of Star-Lord's helmet, as seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, was intended to be permanent by James Gunn, hence why it was not featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, due to Star-Lord having acquired a replacement for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Gunn tweeted that Star-Lord left the helmet in his room on Knowhere as he was in a rush to leave and save Rocket Raccoon, thereby giving a canon explanation to his lack of head gear in Vol. 3.[3][7]
