Synopsis[]
An important figure from Murdock's past reemerges seeking his help to battle a new enemy threatening Hell's Kitchen.
Plot[]
Years ago, after the death of Jack Murdock, Matt Murdock is put into the Saint Agnes Orphanage, as his enhanced senses overwhelm Murdock, causing him pain. The nun invite a blind man, known as Stick, asking him to help Murdock, citing his experience with special children. Stick scolds Murdock for feeling sorry for himself and teaches him that his blindness is barely an inconvenience, comparing to his gift that allows him to see the world better than people who can see. Stick takes Murdock under his wing and trains him martial arts, preparing him for the upcoming war but when Murdock gives Stick a bracelet he made, Stick immediately ends the training and abandons Murdock, saying that he expected too much from him.
In the present, Stick chases after Aito at his office in Tokyo, who tries to escape and shoot Stick at the elevator. Threatening Aito, Stick asks him the whereabouts of the Black Sky but Aito reveals that it was already shipped away to New York City. As Aito swears that it was true, Stick kills him and heads to New York to proceed with his mission.
Reading the article about the Masked Man, Foggy Nelson claims that he is a terrorist but Karen Page defends the vigilante, saying that it was just a speculation. Murdock says that although he is just as furious because of the bombings, the Masked Man should not be tried and convicted by the press. Nelson keeps his negative attitude towards the Masked Man, saying that after what happened, the NYPD might not hold back if they found him. As Page leaves, Nelson says that Page might be keeping something a secret from them and briefly talk about Murdock's fling that did not work out in the end. Afterwards, Murdock goes through the records and finds the info about Leland Owlsley.
Nobu Yoshioka meets with Owlsley, who informs him that all funds have been reallocated and assures that he can proceed with his operations interrupted. Owlsley tries to pry into Yoshioka's plans, asking why he wanted to ensure that the docks will be clear of the police, but Yoshioka leaves without telling him anything. Suddenly, Owlsley gets confronted by the Masked Man who demands the information about Wilson Fisk, and although Owlsley insists he does not know anything, the vigilante corners him. However, the Masked Man then senses someone's presense and gets distracted, allowing Owlsley to hit him with a taser and flee. Being approached by Stick, Murdock asks why did he come back after being gone for twenty years, and Stick replies that he came to save New York from a "horrible death".
Investigating with Ben Urich, Page concludes that Union Allied Construction's paper trail went cold, as the company got liquidated, making the records untraceable. Going through his leads, Urich implies that Union Allied might be connected to the large criminal operations in the city and the bombings of the Russian Mafia. Page asks if Urich believes that the Masked Man was responsible, to which Urich says that he cannot know unless Christian Blake wakes up and tells his story, so Page should stear clear of him for now. Page remarks if they could find connection between the tennaments, the shootings, and Union Allied, Urich could write about it, although he is concerned that if something happens to Page, he will be responsible.
Murdock brings Stick to his apartment, where Stick scolds him for living an ordinary lifestyle and says that he puts his friends in danger by staying with them. Stick continues to mock Murdock and once he mentions his father, Murdock attacks him but Stick effortlessly holds him off. Stick then tells Murdock that the war he was talking about is here and Yoshioka is awaiting the Black Sky, a weapon that would give his organization an immense power. Stick then talks to Murdock about his decision to never cross the line of killing for his cause, saying that one day or another he must do it, otherwise someone will make the choice for him. He promises that if Murdock helps him taking out the Black Sky, it would greatly damage Fisk's operations but Murdock makes him promise to do it without killing anyone.
Page visits Elena Cardenas and asks her questions, trying to connection between Westmeyer-Holt Contracting and the repairmen who trashed Cardenas' apartment. Cardenas tells her she did not have any papers on her but described the two men who came to the apartment. Promising Cardenas that the justice will prevail, Page leaves her but notices that she is being followed and turns out it was the two workers that Cardenas described. Page gets attacked by the two but Nelson, who was also following her, saves Page by knocking the attackers out.
The Masked Man and Stick arrive at the docks where Yoshioka await the container with the Black Sky inside, as Stick orders to clear out the area from Yoshioka's men. While the Masked Man takes out the enemies, the container gets open and he discovers that the Black Sky was a young boy, held by Yoshioka's men in chains. Stick tries to kill the boy with an arrow but the Masked Man saves him, revealing himself, prompting Yoshioka and his men to escape with the boy. As Yoshioka drives away with the Black Sky, the Masked Man fights his subordinates befere noticing that Stick was also gone.
Returning to the apartment, Murdock confronts Stick and demands an explanation, but Stick claims that the thing in the container was not a child but a dangerous weapon that must be destroyed. As Stick is about to leave, Murdock says that he will not let him kill the boy, however, Stick tells him that he already killed him while Murdock was busy with Yoshioka's men. Furious, Murdock attacks Stick and in a subsequent fight manages to defeat his old teacher before telling him to get out of his city. Stick expresses satisfaction and says that Murdock might be not as hopeless as he expected and leaves, while Murdock finds the bracelet he gave Stick back in the day, realizing that he kept it for all these years.
Page brings Nelson to Urich's office at New York Bulletin and although Urich's concerned that she told someone about their investigaiton, but Page assures him that he can trust Nelson. They show Nelson an investigation board, telling him that there was the "King" in charge of the whole Union Allied operation. Urich then put another player on the board, the Masked Man, who despite Nelson's belief, was the King's adversary. All they can do now is to wait and see who trumps the other.
Stick returns to the Stone and informs him that the Black Sky is no longer a threat, at least for now. Stone asks him about Murdock, to which Stick replies that he is still stubborn and immature but when Stone asks will Murdock be ready "when the doors open", Stick says that he has no idea.
