I think this is written wrong. The Nova Corps didn't challenge Thanos, in fact the exact opposite occured; Thanos challenged the Nova Corps for the Infinity Stone they have in their custody, which from what Thor said got destroyed. And the Masters of the Mystics Arts didn't really challenge Thanos either, it was purely self-defense since Strange didn't want to confront Thanos on Titan.
