Synopsis[]

A wide range of characters takes part in this cosmic tale, including Thor's steadfast allies the Warriors Three: Volstagg, Hogun, and Fandral; as well as Thor's treacherous brother, Loki, their noble father, Odin, and the warrior maiden Sif.[1]

Plot[]

Odin is nervous for Thor's coronation as King. He goes to Frigga, who assures Odin that Thor is ready and expresses concern about Odin delaying the Odinsleep. The coronation ceremony begins, and as Thor approaches, Odin worries and reflects on his own coronation, wondering if he was as impulsive as Thor is. Thor confidently approaches Odin, who begins the ceremony. However, it is interrupted by Frost Giants attempting to steal the Casket of Ancient Winters. Thor and Odin rush to Odin's Vault to find the remains of a battle where the Destroyer holds the Casket of Ancient Winters. Thor wants to retaliate and argues with Odin about it, upsetting Odin.

The next day, Odin is told that Thor went to Jotunheim, angering Odin. He rushes to Jotunheim with Sleipnir and finds Thor and his friends surrounded by Frost Giants. Odin tries to convince King Laufey to end the battle, but fails. Odin pushes the Frost Giants back and summons the Bifrost Bridge to take the Asgardians home. In the Himinbjorg, Odin scolds Thor for his rashness and strips Thor of his armor, exiling him to Earth. Odin enchants Mjølnir so that only those were are worthy can use the hammer. Odin fears the ramifications of Thor's actions and exile.

In a flashback to before the coronation ceremony, Loki imagines that the ceremony is for him. Thor approaches Loki to ask about his appearance, but gets confused as he sense jealousy. Loki reassures Thor and joins Sif and the Warriors Three for the ceremony. As the ceremony is interrupted, Loki asks what is happening, and Frigga suggests that he find out. Loki then watches as Odin and Thor argue over whether to retaliate against the Frost Giants. In the banquet hall, Loki agrees with Thor, and Thor gets the idea to attack Jotunheim anyway. Thor convinces Loki, Sif, and the Warriors Three to help, and they leave for Jotunheim the next morning. Heimdall agrees to send them to Jotunheim. Volstagg reflects on the circumstances that led him and the others to Jotunheim. Frost Giants then approach the group, led by Laufey. Loki, Sif, and the Warriors convince Thor to leave, but one of the Frost Giants mocks Thor, leading him to attack. The group become overwhelmed, when Odin arrives and stops the fight.

Outside Puente Antiguo, New Mexico, a group of scientists consisting of Jane Foster, Darcy Lewis, and Erik Selvig search for signs of spatial anomalies but do not find anything. They see the Bifrost Bridge and drive toward it and come across Thor, accidentally hitting him with their car. Thor frantically searches for his hammer and asks where he is. Lewis gets nervous at Thor approaching her, so she uses her taser on him. Lewis, Selvig, and Foster then take Thor to the hospital and return to work, where Selvig suggests the anomaly was an wormhole. They realize that Thor was in the middle of the wormhole and rush to meet him at the hospital, only to find that he had left his room. They hit him again as they drive away to find him, and Thor realizes that he is on Earth.

They take Thor to Smith Motors and give him some clothes, where Thor tells them about the Bifrost. Thor gets hungry, so they go to Isabella's Diner. At the diner, Thor overhears Jake and Pete talking about a satellite that crashed and realizes that they are referring to Mjølnir. Thor rushes to retrieve the hammer while Foster, Selvig, and Lewis return Smith Motors, only to find S.H.I.E.L.D. confiscating their materials, led by Phil Coulson. Thor returns to Smith Motors, where Foster decides to recover both Mjølnir and her research with him.

Thor and Foster look over the S.H.I.E.L.D. Crater Investigation Site from afar. Thor begins to infiltrate the facility, so Foster returns to Smith Motors hoping to help him. Lewis finds a picture Mjølnir in a children's book about Norse mythology, but Foster suggests that the myths could be based on real advanced beings. Selvig hesitantly agrees to help Foster. Selvig helps to recover Thor and the pair return to Foster and Lewis drunk, having celebrated their escape. Thor and Foster sit outside, and Thor apologizes for his attitude, returning the little research he could recover. Thor helps Foster realize how close to the truth her research is.

The next morning, Sif and the Warriors Three suddenly appear at Smith Motors and state their intent to brign Thor back to Asgard. The Destroyer appears and attacks, so Thor asks Sif and the Warriors Three to fight it while Thor helps evacuate the town. Foster refuses to leave, and Thor rushes to help his friends in battle as Foster smiles at him. Thor has learned humility and is ready to return home, help Odin, and face Loki.

Differences between Book and Film[]

  • Loki does not begin his plan to turn Asgardians and Frost Giants against each other until Thor decides to invade Jotunheim.
  • In the movie, Jane Foster finds Thor again while working to recover their information from S.H.I.E.L.D. at a library. In the book, Thor returns to Smith Motors, and Jane decides to help him recover Mjølnir there.
  • The book ends as Thor approaches the Destroyer to confront it in Puente Antiguo.
