"This is the best I can do. This is exactly what I wanted, all of you, against all of me. How can you possibly hope to stop me?"
Ultron to the Avengers[src]

The Ultron Sentries, also known as Sub-Ultrons, were artificially intelligent robots used by Ultron as his personal army.

History[]

HYDRA's Robots[]

"Down in Strucker's lab, I saw some fairly advanced robotics work. They deep-sixed the data, but... I gotta guess he was knocking on a very particular door."
"Artificial intelligence."

HYDRA Sentries

The Sentries created by HYDRA

In 2014, Baron Strucker and his HYDRA agents obtained the Scepter and studied it at their base in Sokovia, realizing that its powers were far greater than they originally thought.[1] Their research of the Mind Stone inside the Scepter enabled them to start experimenting with artificial intelligence, in which they designed several very advanced robots.

In 2015, Strucker's base was attacked by the Avengers. Tony Stark discovered the Scepter, as well as several partially-constructed robots among the experiments in Strucker's secret laboratory.[2]

These robots became known as Sentries and were later modified and mass-produced to be Ultron's army. A few Sentries accompanied Ultron to the Salvage Yard to retrieve vibranium from Ulysses Klaue, and then to Seoul where Ultron attempted to create a new body by using the Regeneration Cradle.[2]

Battle of Sokovia[]

"Purge me from your computers, turn my own flesh against me; it means nothing. When the dust settles, the only thing living in this world... will be metal."
Ultron to Avengers[src]

All remaining Sentries came to Sokovia and assisted Ultron in the battle against the Avengers. As Ultron raised Novi Grad to the sky, the Sentries assisted him by distracting the Avengers. One Sentry crashed onto the Helicarrier's bridge, but was destroyed by Nick Fury and Maria Hill.

The Avengers rallied around the key that would drop Novi Grad to the ground leading Ultron to summon all his Sentries to retrieve the key from them. However, the Sentries were destroyed. When Wanda Maximoff, who was told to stand guard of the key, left to confront Ultron following her brother's death, a remaining Sentry lifted the key, causing Novi Grad to fall. This was stopped by the combined efforts of Thor and Iron Man.

Ultron uploaded himself in the last remaining Sentry and tried to flee, but was intercepted by Vision. After a brief discussion, Vision obliterated Ultron, ending the reign of Ultron and his Sentries.[2]

Salvaged Sentries[]

Various parts of the Sentries were later sold on the black market.[3]

HYDRA collected many of Sentries' parts and took them to an undisclosed location in Eastern Europe, where they used the parts to create a giant robot called Ultimo. HYDRA then used Ultimo to attack a small village. However, the Avengers quickly responded to the attack and destroyed Ultimo.[4]

In 2016, Vulture stole one of the Sentries' arm from Damage Control. The arm was then used by Phineas Mason as the base for the Ultron Blaster Gun.[5]

Age of Ultron[]

The Sentries destroy Sakaar

"According to my diagnostic, the Sentries are rigged for interstellar communication."
Arnim Zola to Black Widow[src]

In an alternate 2015, Ultron used the Sentries as his personal army against the Avengers. Once he took possession of the Infinity Stones, he used the Reality Stone to recreate millions of Sentries and led them into space in order to complete his crusade against life on a universal scale. The Sentries were then sent out to invade planets such as Sovereign, Sakaar, Ego, Xandar, and countless other inhabited planets. They followed Ultron everywhere he went, until he eliminated all life within the universe.

Sentries hunt Black Widow and Hawkeye

The Sentries remaining on the destroyed Earth were left hunting Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton, the only known surviving humans left. Romanoff and Barton had a confrontation in Moscow, Russia with them, but managed to defeat all of them. Later, Romanoff lured other Sentries to the HYDRA Siberian Facility and ambushed them so Barton could upload Arnim Zola's analog consciousness into one of the Sentries. Inside a Sentry, Zola attempted to hack the other Sentries' hive network, however, he failed since Ultron was not in their universe. The Sentries then overwhelmed Barton and Romanoff as they were escaping, leading Barton to sacrifice himself to kill the Sentries.[6]

Sentries invade Thor's universe

In Ultron's campaign to destroy the Multiverse, he brought an army of Sentries to alternate universes and unleashed them upon the universe to exterminate all life within. One such universe that was invaded was Thor's.[7]

Sentries fight Thor in Las Vegas

The Sentries first targeted Las Vegas, Nevada, causing the tourists to flee, and engaged in a battle against Thor. Thor managed to nearly defeat them all, but was taken away by The Watcher before he could finish. Moments later, Ultron was destroyed, by the Guardians of the Multiverse, so all of the Sentries became inactive and fell to the ground.[8]

Illuminati Assembled[]

"All sentries engage. Ultron commander."
―Ultron Sentries[src]

In Earth-838, Tony Stark managed to successfully create a suit of armor around the world through the Ultron Sentries, and let the Avengers retire as the sentries could now safeguard the world against any threat that comes to it.[9]

By 2021, Ultron Sentries were used by the Illuminati in their headquarters. Once Doctor Strange arrived in their universe, the Sentries escorted him to be judged by the Illuminati. When they came to the tribunal, the Sentries shoved Strange inside and closed the door behind him. Shortly afterwards, the Sentries went on the defensive and fought against Scarlet Witch, who was controlling the body of her alternate self from that universe. Maximoff swiftly destroyed all the Sentries, causing the oil from their parts to blast on her clothes and face.[10]

Capabilities[]

The Sentries bear a close resemblance to Ultron, the primary differences being that they are less bulky, have less armor, and are slightly shorter. They have a blue glow that emanates from underneath their faceplates that turns red when Ultron's consciousness has taken direct control over them. Unlike Ultron, they are unable to shoot concussive beams from their fingers. Instead, they are able to transform their arms into plasma cannons that possessed similar capabilities to a Chitauri Gun. Like Ultron, they also possess thrusters on their backs and feet that enabled them to fly.

In an alternate reality where Ultron successfully defeated the Avengers, the Sentries retain their initial appearance and capabilities, After Ultron acquired the Infinity Stones, he used the power of the Reality Stone to mass-produce countless numbers of the machines within seconds. While these Reality Stone-made Sentries do not appear to have any improved capabilities from the physically made variants, Arnim Zola notes after taking control of one that they are capable of interstellar communication. In addition these version of the Sentries possess a red glow through their chassis instead of a blue one.
