Vormir is a remote barren planet, where the Soul Stone was located.

History

New Guardian

"How is it you know this place so well?"
"A lifetime ago, I too sought the stones. I even held one in my hand. But it cast me out, banished me here, guiding others to a treasure I can not possess."
Thanos and Red Skull[src]

In 1945, the Red Skull was transported by the Space Stone to Vormir, where he became the keeper of the Soul Stone.[1]

Gamora's Investigation

"I swear to you on my life. I never found the Soul Stone."
"Accessing memory files. You know what he's about to do. He's finally ready, and he's going for the stones. All of them."
"He can never get them all."
"He will!"
"He can't, Nebula. Because I found the map to the Soul Stone... and I burned it to ash."
Gamora and Nebula[src]

Decades later, Gamora came to learn of Vormir and its housing of the Soul Stone, keeping this information a secret from her estranged, megalomaniac father Thanos.[1]

Sacrifice of Gamora

Eventually being forced to reveal the location of the Soul Stone upon seeing her sister Nebula being tortured, Thanos took Gamora to Vormir to find it. Reaching the mountains, they were greeted by the Stonekeeper. He explained that the only way to acquire the Soul Stone was to give up one's "soul", but it had to be the soul of someone he loved. Gamora laughed saying that Thanos never felt a thing for anyone but himself just to find him crying, as he pulls her into the abyss. Thanos sacrificed Gamora in anguish, weeping for her, while earning the Soul Stone for his Infinity Gauntlet soon afterwards.[1]

Trivia
