"Well, they're certainly not bred to cuddle. They're creatures of war, not the shaggy dog of men."
Gaius Ponarian[src]

The Vrellnexians, commonly referred to as Roaches, are a ferocious species native to the planet Kitson. In an alternate timeline, they infested the surface of Earth after its destruction.

History[]

Arriving on Earth[]

In an alternate timeline, years after the destruction of the Earth, the Vrellnexians used the cosmic gravity storms to arrive to the surface of the crumbling planet.

Some time after Kasius' exile, Gaius Ponarian sold him a litter of Vrellnexian.[2]

Infesting the Lighthouse[]

"That was a Vrellnexian. We call them Roaches. They can surf gravity storms so they'd be able to breach a few years back. This level's been sealed up ever since then."
Virgil to Phil Coulson[src]

Some time later, some of the wild Vrellnexians were able to breach into the third level of the Lighthouse. Since then, that level was sealed off by the Kree.[1] Over the years, Human scavengers who entered level 3, were attacked and drained of their blood by the Vrellnexians. When Virgil tried to kill a Vrellnexian, he blew open a window, which caused the creature to get sucked into the vacuum of space. Moments later another Vrellnexian killed Virgil and tried to chase Phil Coulson, Jemma Simmons, Alphonso Mackenzie and Yo-Yo Rodriguez. It managed to avoid the plasma shots, but was disintegrated by Quake as it was about to devour them.[1]

Survival on the Surface[]

"Nothing can survive on the surface. That's where they send people to die."
Tess[src]

When Zev was banished to the surface of the Earth for alleged possession of a firearm in violation of the Lighthouse's rules, he was attacked and killed by a flock of Vrellnexians.[4]

When Melinda May was exiled to the surface of the Earth as a roach food, she was spotted by a Vrellnexian which was killed just in time by Enoch who was sent to the surface by Leo Fitz in order to rescue May. Moments later, when a Gravity Storm hit the area, the Roaches used them to escape from the Human survivors on the surface.[5]

The Lighthouse Massacre[]

"The roaches are dead! You're safe now!"
Flint[src]

To punish the inhabitants of the Lighthouse, Kasius ordered the Kree Watch to release the Vrellnexians from the sealed level. The creatures attacked and killed many of the people who could not defend themselves. Armed with S.H.I.E.L.D. technology, Alphonso Mackenzie and Yo-Yo Rodriguez managed to kill all of the Vrellnexians.[3]

Haunting Memories[]

Despite having been exterminated in the future Lighthouse, the Vrellnexians kept haunting the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents' memories to the point that two illusions of the creatures were generated by the Fear Dimension when the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents returned in their time. The illusions were later destroyed by the combined efforts of Phil Coulson and Deathlok.[6]

Characteristic Traits[]

The Vrellnexians are four legged creatures, extremely ferocious and rugged. They have displayed levels of extreme agility to escape attacks on them and have the ability to stick themselves to the wall or ceiling against the gravity.

They are able to survive in extremely hostile environments, like the vacuum of space or the surface of a barren planet for many years, and are able to travel across the galaxy using the cosmic dust or gravity storms. They are known to make a rattling sound when in the hunt for food or when in danger.
