Bucky Barnes, having enlisted the United States Armed Forces shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, spent a whole winter training at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin. As he quickly achieved the rank of Sergeant, he and the rest of the 107th Infantry Regiment were shipped out to Europe, ending up at the Italian front.

On July 8, 1964 two of Manitowoc citizens, Robert Coulson, a history professor at the local high school and the coach of the schools football team, the Manitowoc Outlaws, and his wife Julie Coulson had a son: Phil Coulson.
